The Boys Studio

Hair & makeup studio in Newcastle

If you’re anything of a beauty fan, you’ve mostly likely heard of these guys. The Boys Studio, which opened in early 2018, has been absolutely killing it across Newcastle and surrounds, and has no plans on slowing down any time soon.

So just who are Dean & Mitch, the duo behind these upcoming masterclasses and creators behind their booming brand; The Boys Studio.

So let's meet Dean and Mitch! The two creatively glamorous souls behind The Boys Studio, having both respectively worked in their industries for over 10 years and continuously striving to make people feel their best.

The pair have known one another for 12 years. Originally meeting at Starbucks and adding each other on Myspace (yes that old thing), and quickly sat atop their friends list; oh weren’t the Noughties such a fun time!

“The great thing about our story is that we have grown together in our industry and have seen each other get stronger and stronger. The Boys Studio was always in our sights from our first year together.

“We weren’t even good at makeup or hair, but we knew this was what we wanted to do – which was bring premium makeup and hair that was exclusive, intimate, fun, camp, and fashion-inspired looks. All whilst delivering world-class work for our client.”

The man behind the make-up masterpieces is glam squad member number one; Dean. Originally, he was studying film and media, aspiring to be a film director. Via a few twists and turns through life Dean was exposed to the world of cosmetics.

“After studying, I went straight into graphic design, as I was always creative in high school. This was short lived, but then I started playing around with Makeup as a different creative outlet, and I just fell in love.

“I went on to study a short course and then landed work in cosmetic retail and built my way up from casual, to managing Westfield Kotara's multi-million dollar MAC cosmetics counter, that became the #1 counter in the country,” Dean said.

Since that shift in career, Dean has worked alongside industry brands such as Napoleon Perdis and MAC cosmetics. Even landing a trip to Japan with MAC to learn about the diverse culture of makeup, and how it can impact one’s lifestyle.

So Dean…after all of these years in the industry, do you have a fav look you love creating?

“I love all elements of makeup, from Special Effects, Editorial, Drag and of course the quintessential Glam! The great thing about makeup is that every look is different, and everyone is different - the subject is what I love to look at first and then be led from there based on the brief for an occasion.”

Now to the hair! Mitch has literally been in the industry since day dot. His mum was a hairdresser, so being exposed to the salon world when he was a kid sparked that excitement early on.

“I used to go into the salon after school and help with Mum's clients, washing out colours and perms, and sweeping up hair. I just loved the environment of the salon and how happy everyone was while getting made over.

“I always loved the hair salon scenes and makeover montages in movies and always wanted to be a part of that life; it was so glamorous,” Mitch told me.

Working alongside some of the best in the Australian hair industry, Mitch has been a part of countless photoshoots, prep for fashion week and even utilising his skills as a platform for education.

“I love every element of my job; every element enhances the next and creates a full look. However, my favourite part about my job is the connection I get to have with my clients and making a difference for them.

“There is no better feeling than making some feel confident and beautiful on the outside while having such a beautiful emotional bond together. It doesn’t get much better than that,” Mitch said.

Now, whilst the Boys Studio space in Mayfield West opened just 18 months, the pair have had some incredible opportunities and have certainly changed the local industry with their bubbly personalities and iconic looks.

From being the Makeup Directors on the Cancer Council’s Stars of Newcastle, to supporting major charity events with their Glam Bars (think photobooth, but glam!) as well as supporting Timberlina’s Drag Off that wrapped up this year’s Newcastle Pride Festival.

“We’ve always had an objective, and that was to give back to our community and to support what means the most to us through charity events. We utilise our business to be heavily involved within our local community - while still maintaining our studio,” Dean told me.

Whether you’re looking for a hairdresser or a make-up artist, Dean and Mitch of The Boys Studio are becoming highly sought after, so we would recommend booking in early!
