Son of a Gun

Breakfast + lunch + dinner + late night eats + live music

Hamilton’s Beaumont Street has long offered an eclectic mix of food and drink options, and with the arrival of a particular venue in 2019, the character-filled area found their newest meeting hub: Son of a Gun.

The family-owned space was the creation of a local couple whose experience in the hospitality sector stretches across Newcastle to overseas. Having owned their first late-night restaurant in Canada over ten years ago, as well as a number of establishments across town, what they’ve created here at Son of a Gun is truly incomparable.

“We’ve honestly loved having this venue. We created this venue as a place for somewhere we would like to hang out as a family, and we’ve achieved that and it’s great that other people love it just as much.

“Whether people are coming in here to work on their laptop for three hours and only order one cappuccino or they’re with a big group of friends or anything in between. I wanted a space that filled the vibe for lots of different people and I feel like we’ve done that.”

Moving into their fourth year of business, the local foodie joint has recently launched their live music offering which is happening SEVEN nights a week.

Sundays will feature buskers’ night, Wednesdays will be dedicated to the young up-and-coming artists of Newcastle, Thursdays will be for jazz, and Friday and Saturday nights will be where you can experience our top local artists; organised by Gabe Argiris of Novotone. You can also expect an open-mic night and music trivia evenings.

“We’re really excited about our live music and moving into that night-time venue offering. That paired with our new bar license, which we didn’t have when we originally opened, now means that people can just come in for a drink, they don’t have to order food.”

That’s right, you can now just order a bottle of wine or a cocktail to enjoy, catch a live gig, and lap up that unrivaled Beaumont Street energy.

If you’re finding yourself rather peckish, you’ll be excited to hear that Son of a Gun has also been elevating their food offering. Whilst it still has a strong American BBQ offering, it’s just a little bit more gourmet.

With one hell of a dedicated kitchen and an ethos to make everything, – and I mean everything – in-house, Son of a Gun’s menus are full of mouth-watering goodness.

The brunch menu features both your tried-and-tested favourites with a bunch of signature American and Canadian-inspired dishes. The most popular? The Canadian Breakfast with bacon, pork sausages, two eggs, buttermilk hotcakes, and Canadian maple syrup.

Moving into the evenings, the menu has been designed with sharing in mind. Whilst you can still get your hands on your own burger or salad, it’s dishes like their Smokehouse Platter complete with 18-hour smoked brisket, pulled pork, smoked chicken, chicken wings, cornbread, pickles, slaw, and chips that will get the big-time foodies excited.

Pair your Smokehouse Platter with the West Virginia Loaded Fries topped with smoked chicken, bacon, cherry chipotle bbq, shallots, mozzarella, ranch, and parmesan; a Nourish Bowl with roasted pumpkin, avocado, pickled onion, garlic roasted broccolini, hummus, roasted macadamia nuts, grilled corn salsa, mixed leaves, and salsa verde; or the Lamb Bowl with 8-hour braised lamb, roast pumpkin, balsamic beetroot, goats cheese, macadamia, pickled onion, minted peas, dukkah, mixed leaves, and balsamic glaze.

Enjoy all of this and more with the venue’s new cocktail list, or sit back and enjoy a $20 jug of Young Henry’s when you’re enjoying one of the live music gigs.

Whilst you’re at it, we would highly recommend ordering one of their house-made sodas. Made from scratch, they’re not as sweet as your usual sodas but pack a punch when it comes to flavour.

If you’ve visited the venue since its inception, you’ll have noticed that its decorated back wall has grown its collection; now a visual representation of the venue’s starting point to how it’s grown with personal additions from friends, family, staff, and customers now donning the walls.

“Over the years, customers have brought in pieces, we have staff photos and family photos up there. It’s a really unique and eclectic mix. The wall has just grown over the years, and it has so much character. We really love it.”

Son of a Gun has truly cemented its place within the Beaumont Street community, becoming a hangout for the young, the old, and those that land somewhere between.

“We’re really proud of this venue and the feeling it gives off when you walk in.”
