From the team that brought you ROULÈ in Kotara, Convoy Commune brings relaxed holiday vibes to Merewether.

The seaside suburb of Merewether has been quietly awaiting the arrival of a contemporary café to match it’s relaxed, 'beachy good vibes.' Well, that time has come with the exciting new arrival of Convoy Commune! Taking up real estate right on the corner of Mitchell and Caldwell Streets, it officially opened doors to the public in November 2019.

Moving into the old homewares store, Salt & Stone that was a favourite amongst Merewether locals, Dave and the team had a whole kitchen fit-out that needed doing, but have kept with the crisp white walls, light and bright interior and natural timber finishes that the space was already boasting.

Convoy Commune is brought to you by the team behind ROULÈ, which was one of Kotara’s go-to caffeine spots, before having to close their doors in July this year. Not wanting to feel defeated, Dave saw an opportunity to bring his love for coffee and café vibes back to life, after finding the vacant space just a mere TWO weeks after ROULÈ had closed its doors. If that’s not a ‘it’s meant to be moment’ then I don’t know what is!

“I still work fulltime, so needless to say, it's been quite a challenge juggling the two. I’m incredibly thankful for my amazing team of staff, especially my barista/chef/manager extraordinaire, Adam, who keeps the café running and ensures our customers are always happy and satisfied on a daily basis,” Dave said.

The interior houses some of our favourite pieces from the gems over at Villa Lane in Redhead, including the almighty Eva rattan pendants and rattan mirror. Dave let us in on a little secret that some more of the Villa Lane range will be making an appearance in the retail shelves soon!

The space is also home to a beautiful, customised white San Remo Café Racer coffee machine, that will be slinging out Convoy Commune’s own signature blend of specialty coffee all day long.

Convoy Commune is bringing all of the relaxed vibes you might find in Bali or Byron Bay with it, making it a little oasis in our very own Merewether, and you can even spend some time browsing the retail space which is currently stocking the Huskee Cup, Good X Karma goodies as well as MAYDE tea that is also on the drinks menu. Keep an eye on this space as it's due to expand with a select range of retail items including small homewares, essentials, pieces from Villa Lane as well as some house-made products being released over the coming weeks.

Now to the food. Keeping with the same ethos Dave worked with at ROULÈ, the menu at Convoy Commune is kept simple with fresh, healthy dishes including our personal fav; the rotating salad bar. It features a range of gourmet deli-style salads with optional proteins and add-ons, allowing you to design your own bowl; the perfect take-away lunch to pick up on your way to work.

On the menu you’ll find a range of tasty and colourful options that cater for all dietary requirements; vegan, vegetarian and even gluten-free. You name it, they’ve got it covered.

Our picks from the menu have got to be the Crowd Pleaser Acai Bowl, topped with fresh seasonal fruit, house-made maple roasted granola and seeds, we think we’ve just found your next fav brekky dish! The Smoked Salmon and Avocado on sourdough, served with radish, tomato medley, rocket, chimichurri and nigella seeds takes Avo on toast to a whole new level.

“Outside of our menu, our aim is to become a part of the community! We’re in the business of people and positive vibes, with fine food, coffee and some retail on the side. We’re not just looking for customers, we’re here to build relationships and hope through doing so, we can make a whole bunch of long-term friends.”

The name itself encompasses everything that Dave wants Convoy Commune to stand for. Convoy; to travel as a group, and Commune; a group of people who live, work and share together.
