For those of us who rely on our daily morning pastry and coffee fix from Baked Uprising, it wouldn’t have gone unnoticed that the team had temporarily closed their doors for a much anticipated and exciting reno/installation. After ten long days Baked Uprising has officially re-opened and have a rather large new team member to introduce.
Like most businesses, over the past few months Baked Uprising has been faced with multiple sets of challenges that has forced them to look for new ways to adapt. From closing their courtyard space to creating an online ordering system and putting social distancing practices into place for customers; Alice and the team have done an extraordinary job to make sure we’ve all been able to get our coffee and carb fix safely.
“It’s always in the back of your mind how you can make your business more streamlined, and initially what we put in place did make things more clunky, and it’s still clunky. But we now have the ability for people to pre-order before they get to the bakery without having to call,” Alice explained.
If you weren’t already aware, Baked Uprising has opened up an online portal for shoppers to preorder their baked goods, that means the disappointment of missing out on the last city loaf is no longer; you’ll know when you order online if there are any left!
For those not sure what they want, and would prefer to order when they arrive, a customer service hatch has been built onto the exterior of the building that features a built-in iPad connected to the online store so you can order with zero contact.
Ordering online you can get all the expected goods such as fresh loaves of bread and pastries, as well as pies and sausage rolls. To make things even easier, they’ve even incorporated pantry staples into their online offering including milk, eggs, honey, coffee beans, flour, and even bake at home croissants.
“There’s been more production, and we’ve needed to buy more flour for the people who have done our courses and making their own bread and providing them with what they need while in isolation. It doesn’t matter if people are buying the bread from us or making it at home themselves, it’s about having food safely.”
So, back to that new exciting installation they’ve been busy working on for the past ten days.
“We have a new oven, eight and half tonne worth of oven, it’s huge. To give you an idea how much bigger it is, our previous oven would allow for 30 loaves if we packed it well, this new oven will hold 260 loaves roughly, loosely packed, which is a huge jump so it’s going to take some time for us to work out how to handle this volume.
“It was built and installed in parts and it took three technicians from Melbourne, two from Newcastle and three type B certifiers from the gas industry to give the approval needed to start using it. There was also three plumbers and four electricians and then the flute had to be built by another three people, so it took a lot of people to bring it all together.”
Keeping themselves busy with the ongoing demand, Alice and her team have also been busily building on new ideas which includes their Vegan Sourdough pasta which will be available in store soon, as well as at Harris Farm.
“We ordered this on the last line before Italy went into shutdown. It’s been put into action and it’s just taken off from there. We have created a variety of shapes but this one is my favourite; it reminds me of a seahorse!”
While Baked Uprising will continue to operate in a takeaway capacity only, when the doors do reopen things will look a little different with Alice planning to reorganise the indoor and courtyard area so as to provide a more ‘social-distancing’ friendly space to enjoy your coffee and baked goods in.
