Built in 1977 by Newcastle City Council as an administration centre, and known locally as the Roundhouse, Crystalbrook Kingsley officially reopens its doors on June 9 welcoming all to experience Newcastle's first five star luxury hotel. Christened Crystalbrook Kingsley, a reference to Newcastle’s earlier name of Kingston which dates back to 1804, the once-in-a-lifetime re-creation has preserved the local heritage all while embracing the natural environment.
The community of Newcastle is now invited to become a Crystalbrook Kingsley Local and experience for themselves this incredible addition to the city.

On your first experience of visiting Crystalbrook Kingsley be prepared to be wowed and simply overwhelmed by its grandeur. Entering the building you naturally follow its curves and it’s here that you’re introduced to the warm and welcoming Ms Mary.
A deli, café, and lounge Ms Mary has been named in honour of Mary Eckford, one of Newcastle’s pioneering European settlers in the early 1800s who was shipped off to Australia at just 14 when she was found guilty of stealing an apron and a handkerchief in Devon, England.
Ms Mary is all about embracing the region’s artisans and farmers with the always-evolving space seamlessly transitioning from morning coffee meet-up to lunch date location. If it's the outdoors you prefer, step out onto the deck area that overlooks Wheeler Place, to take in all the city happenings by day, and catch the buzz of the city’s cultural heart take shape at night.
Once you've explored Ms Mary take the elevators up to The Rooftop.
As the doors open take a moment to appreciate the spectacular setting that is Romberg’s. Featuring a lowered 10-metre marble bar that allows uninterrupted views of Civic Park, the sophisticated yet fun space is where you’ll discover expertly crafted artisanal cocktails, locally brewed beer, and a long list of Hunter Valley wines.
Speaking with Food & Beverage Team Leader, Mark Sinclair he explained, Romberg’s has a beautiful and intimate atmosphere with booths and low tables, perfect for date nights, catching up with friends, after-work drinks, and is made for intimate celebrations and cocktail nights.
An emphasis has been placed on working with local products so expect to see Newcastle brewhouse FogHorn on the taps and the Carrington-based Earps Distilling Co. in your cocktails with an exclusive partnership being established.
We wanted to celebrate our proximity to the Hunter Valley and have an outstanding selection of top shelf
wines including Brokenwood Graveyard Shiraz, which includes both 2018 and 1996 vintages.
Crystalbrook Kingsley Head Chef Natalie Bolt, whose resume extends from Dubai to Turkey, Indonesia, and most recently Thailand, brings her passion for food and great produce to the team. Natalie provided a few insights into what we can expect from the Romberg's menu.
Romberg’s offers a stylish bar bites and charcuterie menu, focusing on both native ingredients and using great local suppliers in our beautiful region, such as our Port Stephens oysters.
In addition to the food and beverage offering, it is important to highlight, as you enter The Roundhouse the consideration of every aspect of the building and design process.
Working with local architectural firm EJE Architecture the design intent was to strengthen the identity of the iconic building by elegantly completing the existing structure with a rooftop addition.
The same consideration to Crystalbrook Kingsley’s exterior has been skilfully extended to the inside. Designed by Melbourne-based Suede Interior Design, hints and glimpses of birds, footprints, and feather motifs in the Crystalbrook Kingsley brand colours of yellow and charcoal, tell the story of Newcastle’s mining past.
Crystalbrook Kingsley is brought to you by Crystalbrook, one of Australia’s leading sustainable and innovative independent hospitality companies. Each hotel in the portfolio carries an authentic expression of its location, a passion for responsible luxury, considered design and a twinkle of fun for a uniquely enriching experience.
