Sustainable fun fashion at this Hamilton space
Lovers of hidden goods, preloved pieces, and vintage gems will be well acquainted with this iconic store on Beaumont St, The Retro Wardrobe.
Launched in late 2014 by Rebecca Wheatley, or Bec as she prefers, The Retro Wardrobe is home to sustainable fun fashion, the perfect spot for those on the hunt for that quirky piece of furniture, the perfect fashion piece, an old-school kitchenware item, or anything and everything else in between!
Bec, alongside her mum, Julie, landed upon the business on a bit of a whim back in 2014 when the pair spotted a gumtree ad. Yes, you read that right, a gumtree ad!
“I spotted a gumtree add with the business for sale. Some research, a few days of contemplation, an offer accepted and no looking back; here we are.
“When we bought the business, we wanted to re-brand. An evening of brainstorming later with mum, a notepad, a pen, and of a bottle of wine later, The Retro Wardrobe was born,” Bec said.
Taking over the space that was originally in town, the mother-daughter duo had developed The Retro Wardrobe philosophy over a number of years before Bec took over on her own full-time.
“My mother Julie and I owned the business for the first two years...the last 4+ years have just been me, but mum can still sometimes be spotted helping out on the odd occasion!”
Take a step inside on any given day and you’ll always be delighted with a whole new range of new goodies curated by Bec. Sourcing pieces from almost anywhere and everywhere, Bec is generally found exploring markets and garage sales almost every weekend.
“I also have trips away visiting small country towns to source. The treasure hunt is constant and honestly, addictive!”
With a constant need to source for new vintage and retro goods, means you’ll always be surprised with what you find in-store. From quirky modern-day pieces to bright retro and stunning vintage items; the list is never-ending!
“We’ve got clothing, handmade earrings, groovy 70s kitchenalia, and even funky homewares.”
For those who frequent the Beaumont St store, you’ll know not only how vibrant the store is, but how friendly and inviting Bec is each time you step through the door.
“I love being able to build friendships and relationships with my gorgeous customers, the constant treasure hunt for new stock, feeling like part of the community, and of course the sustainable aspect of using and re-loving what’s already out there.”
