Adding a bit of spice to Newcastle's Hunter St Mall
This is the place to be if you need a little more spice in your life.
What do socks and spices have in common? Nothing of course except, that is, if you’re Chris Sim who decided to open his Hunter Street Mall spice emporium and call it My Souk Drawer.
On telling friends of his new venture there was a little confusion as to why Chris would want to open a shop full of socks. Whilst that may have been an easy mistake to make, what’s not so easy to mistake are the aromatic smells that now fill the Hunter St mall on a daily basis.
Chris said that he wanted to create a shop that was just like a ‘market place in a drawer’, which explains the name.
Entering My Souk Drawer you are confronted with row after row of spice buckets and display cases that hold a vast array of your typical curries, salts & peppers. Scattered amongst these are the blended varieties such as the Ras-el-Hanout a Morrocan spicy twist of rich sweet flavours that perfectly accompanies pretty much any dish. Chris is also a keen cook and is more than happy to pass on his spice knowledge and recipe favourites.
Once you’ve perused the more than 70 different spicy flavours you’ll also notice that there’s more to My Souk Drawer than just spices. Sprinkled throughout is a variety of baking ingredients, nuts, confectionery, books, bags, aprons and yes socks!
Chris has a quirky sense of humor and recognised the irony of the stores name deciding to have a little fun with it. Not prepared to comprise on quality, even with his socks, Chris has sourced two brands Sweet Marcel and Tabbisocks both of which are better described as being wearable art or high quality legwear and both come in colours that will fit your every mood.
My Souk Drawer is the perfect place to visit if you’re looking to enhance your cooking repertoire and quite simply add some spice to your life!
