Mitch Revs Gallery

The new creative space on Hunter St by local talent Mitch Revs

Mitch Revs' Gallery was one of those weird and wonderful things that evolved over night; literally!

One of Newcastle’s favourite creatives, Mitch Revs, recently opened up an exhibition space on Hunter Street and by golly we were excited to check it out as well as catch-up on Mitch’s busy life!

Mitch Revs' Gallery, conveniently located right next door to Newy Burger Co, is Mitch Revs newest work development that will hopefully sit in our city centre for people to enjoy for a long time to come.

It's been over a year since we last caught up with you and gosh you've been busy. Can you tell me a bit about some of the projects you've worked on over the last 12 months?

“Last year was definitely one to remember. The projects that I was able to work on and cram into a 12-month period is still something I am trying to wrap my head around. The X Games, Vegemite, Westfield, Reflections Exhibition, the opening of the gallery, and the Australian Open… all of these opportunities combined really taught me a lot about myself as a person and an artist.

“The highlight of all of the these would have to be my solo exhibition, Reflections. I had been working on this show for 2 years in between other jobs. I had set an unrealistic vision of something that I wanted to achieve and in the end it all came together. That was one hell of a feeling.”

How did the gallery come about and how long has it been in the works for?

“While on the search for an exhibition site in December 2018, I came across the space which is now the studio and gallery. After realising the space was too small to hold the work I had for my exhibition, I quickly dismissed it as an option to exhibit. That’s when the light bulb moment of a possible long-term gallery was thrown into conversation by neighbour, Ben (owner of Newy Burger Co).”

Currently, some of Mitch’s own works are hanging in the studio, but he has much bigger plans to utilise the space.

“My idea with this boutique gallery is to shake up the traditional Art Gallery and do it a little different…the gallery operates at a flat rate fee, therefore no hidden costs. This allows the exhibiting artist or group to speak about their own work and use the space as if it were their own.

“Over the coming months there will be an opportunity for some group shows and we are looking forward to celebrating the talent here in Newcastle!”
