A boutique jewellery studio that is designed in Newcastle and made in Australia
Kate & Kole is a jewellery studio that began in Newcastle almost five years ago. Focused on creating both collections and bespoke designs, each Kate & Kole piece is made to order and often customised for the wearer. Sara & Maddy now run Kate & Kole from Newcastle and Sydney, with Sara running the studio from her home in Georgetown and Maddy leading the brand and marketing from Sydney.
Over the past 12 months they have started focusing more on engagement and bridal jewellery with two collections designed around feature stones and delicate details. VOW and VOW II show case beautiful lab grown diamonds which have become particularly popular over the past 10 years because of their ethical and environmental properties and slightly lower price point.
“We absolutely love helping people design and create their jewellery. Whether is a piece made from a collection of stones or handed down jewellery, or an engagement ring.”
“We’ve especially loved working with guys and gals to create engagement rings because there is just so much excitement around the piece. Working with someone to pick a stone, guiding them through that process [which is a bit of a mind field] and then pulling together the design and setting their partner will love, is really special.”
“Our goal is to work with more and more local people, even though we can provide a similar service with customers from further afield, working with someone in person is just so much fun, and something we’d like to do more of”
We sat down with Kate & Kole to talk through how to start the process of creating a bespoke piece of jewellery.
“The first step is to get in touch. Send us a message via our contact form below with your return phone number and we will give you a call as soon as possible to discuss your ideas and design.
Things to have in mind before we have an initial chat are things like time frames, budget and design particulars. If you have a super tight turn around we need to know this up front. It will save both parties a lot of time and heartache if we can determine a delivery window and any important dates. Having a rough idea of budget and where and how you want to spend your money is a lot really important. We offer lots of diamond alternatives but if the stone is your number one focus we can chat how to get the best outcome for your dollar. Other design particulars might include band shape, whether it needs to sit with another ring, and what material it is made out of.
It is also fine to have no idea about the above we can help talk you through some options.
After we have created a brief, we will come back to you with an initial design and estimate. Because the price of stones and gold fluctuates so much, the price of your piece will be an ongoing conversation. There are always ways to work within your budget so we provide an estimate initially before any stones or gold is purchased.
The initial design will include front and top views and any particular design details. If being designed as a set, the matching wedding will also be provided.
This is the time to give feedback and to start discussing details. If you have a type of stone in mind we will start sourcing stones. Size, quality and colour all influence the cost of the stone. We use a few Australian suppliers and one supplier in the starts for some particular types of stones. We have been very careful about how we chose our supplier making sure all stones are sourced as ethically and sustainably as possible. Talk to us about minimising your impact with your choice of stone.
Once the stone has been purchased and your design has been finalised, we start the making process. Some pieces are made entirely from hand, others use cast pieces to help craft your bespoke piece. We can recycle stones and gold from previous pieces but this means that casting cannot always be used, resulting in a higher price point. Again, talk to us about your budget, we want you to have a piece of jewellery that you will love forever and won’t set you back half a house mortgage.”
Kate & Kole are currently looking for Newcastle locals to collaborate with. If you have a piece in mind and would like to start the creating process make sure you get in touch and start designing.
They are currently offering a free design and consult session (currently being held online until social distancing restrictions are lifted) and a $100 voucher to go towards a bespoke piece for Newcastle residence who mention this article.
