How often is it that you enter a space and can’t help but say wow? Whilst there’s plenty of beautiful places around Newcastle, there’s one that always manages to leave my jaw on the floor. That is, none other than the beautiful florist in Cooks Hill, Blooms on Darby. Created by floral stylists and mother/daughter team, Melissa and Natalie bring together their experience in floral design and their passion for travel to create boutique pieces through the use of texture shape and colour.
Each and every day brings a new feeling of joy when you step into Blooms. Actually, you don’t even have to set foot in their space to feel that joy, watching passersby you notice smile after smile as they look at the bursts of colour literally flowing out the door and into the street. How can you not smile at that?
So, how did Blooms on Darby come to life?
Following a holiday to Europe, Mel and Nat were inspired by the beautiful European florists and their tiny little shops that had flowers spilling out on the street, and on moving to Newcastle they decided the time was right to find a space of their own. A coffee on Darby decided the location with a mini-makeover taking place on the same street and before long, Blooms on Darby came to life.
Now, five years on, the stunning shopfront that is Blooms on Darby has become an institution on the street and certainly one shopfront hard to miss.
Sitting directly opposite Core Espresso, the terrace’s black exterior paired with both dried floral bouquets, hanging plants and rose petals scattered over the payment really invite passers-by into the cosy space. Once inside, the florals just keep coming. The ceiling houses one of the most incredible floral arrangements I’ve ever seen, with each corner abundant with flowers and greenery
With a solid team of now five, plus a few little helpers (Nat’s daughters Lucy Belle and Nora, as well as in-house flower-cat; Ruby), Blooms on Darby is injecting their floral love all around town. From weddings, to birthday bouquets; you name it, they’re all over it.
“We believe in our team that surrounds us, we encourage, we inspire, and we like to keep the creativity alive. Each of our floral designers have full qualifications in floral design…by working alongside one another we all learn, teach and motivate each other to keep creating.”
When asked to describe their floristry style they both agree on a slightly more vintage approach. Drawn to unusual textures Nat said they love to work with varieties that are a little different and anything that captures their eye, however, they are always open to requests.
Mel and Nat have created a stunning floral space, however if you can’t drop in, Blooms on Darby deliver to pretty much anywhere across the Hunter, Maitland, Lake Macquarie and Newcastle (of course).
