If you’ve spent any time in Newcastle, you’re sure to know about Pappa Sven – Cooks Hill’s authentic Nordic lifestyle store. Established in 2014 by owner Libby Helinski, following her gap year in Sweden, Pappa Sven is known
for its stunning Scandinavian homewares, clothing and art along with being completely unique and loveable.
Checking out the store and chatting to Libby, it’s easy to see that her passion for the Swedish way of life runs deep. “After we returned from Skellefteå,
I knew I wanted to open a Swedish Homewares store in Newcastle. I have a background in textiles and I kept seeing all these products – homeware, furniture
etc being made so beautifully and for longevity. It was a totally different shopping experience too. When you go into town, there’s this real community
vibe. The product craftsmanship is one thing, but that warm, welcoming in-store experience was just so genuine and I wanted to bring that [feeling]
The good news is that a visit to the Pappa Sven showroom is not the only way to get all these amazing Nordic feels. Libby has recently renovated the apartment upstairs and it's now available to lease via Airbnb.
Enter the world of Pappa Sven’s Apartment, Cook's Hill's latest short-term accommodation offering, and what you'll receive is an authentic, Swedish living experience, right here in Newcastle. “It’s always been a dream of mine to create a little piece of Scandinavia in the heart of Newcastle and the Apartment, alongside our Summer Cabin is a lovely extension of our showroom. The whole concept is about making you feel like you’re living in an apartment in Helsinki", comments Libby.
It certainly does. The Apartment is a sweet, one-bedroom Scandi-oasis with all the quality products and simple, functional style that you’d expect from
Walking inside, the Apartments exposed brick, open-plan layout and incredibly high-ceilings create a great sense of space and character. Libby has very carefully selected all elements for the interior too, from the cool furniture, light fittings and luxurious bedding to the tasty breakfast muesli and coffee you’ll find on hand, ensuring your stay is stylish and comfortable. “It's so nice to see the homewares and other showroom products we offer in situ. I'm also really grateful to the local suppliers who helped bring the Apartment to life. Belinda from Valley Vogue who sourced the gorgeous drapes and Classic Blinds in particular were great.”
If, like me, you develop quite a fondness for the natural, organic spa and body products, while enjoying the gorgeous walk-in rainfall shower, you’re in luck. As with the Summer Cabin, you can purchase any of the little goodies you find in Pappa Sven’s Apartment – just pop downstairs!
One of the best things about Pappa Sven’s Apartment though (and believe me, there are many), is the location. On Union Street, you’re just a short stroll or Uber from the Honeysuckle Precinct and Darby Street, giving you easy access to variety of coffee hot spots, café’s, pubs and shopping.
