Authentic German cuisine
If you love your meat you've got to try the Pork KnuckleSee our handpicked guides to Newcastle
Who is Oma? Well Oma is German for Grandma, and that's exactly whose recipes the Fren family are cooking up in this gorgeous German restaurant on Watt Street, Newcastle.
You might have seen I Love Oma's at the Newcastle Farmers Markets selling their beautiful German shortbreads and biscuits over the years, well Mark and Cathy Fren also have a family-run restaurant called Oma's Kitchen serving up hearty German meals for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner seven days a week (except dinner on Sunday).
When we say family-run that is no understatement! Besides a couple of travelling German backpackers, everyone else at Oma's is a family relation of some sort: there's cousins, children, aunties and even the Fren family grandmother working at Oma's Kitchen.
So the food... Well I can't go past a warm Pretzel for starters followed by the Bavarian Pork Knuckle served with Red Cabbage and mashed Potato for mains, the pork is so tender it melts in your mouth. It's Oma's Kitchen's signature dish, but it takes 6 hours to prepare so make sure you ring ahead and order it in advance.
