Walking down Hunter Street, it’s hard to not notice the change in landscape over the years. From revitalised office buildings to new modes of transport, eclectic cafes and boutique bars, Newcastle is a far cry away from the industrial, steel city it was once known for.

One of the newest additions to the centre of town has been in the form of the expansion of the University of Newcastle city campus.

Home of the Creative Industries, Business and Law Schools, the campus incorporates the Conservatorium of Music, Newcastle Legal Centre, I2N Hub, Watt Space Gallery and at the heart – the landmark education precinct NeW Space.

Perfectly perched in the centre of the burgeoning city, we caught up with some current students to chat about why the city precinct offers the best study/work/life balance.

For Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship student Liam, the convenience of living close to NeW Space means he can enjoy the simple things in life while ticking all the boxes of everyday work-study life.

“I currently live in Maryville which is a 25-minute walk or 10-minute bike ride to the city campus.

“I usually head there by foot – I love the walk along the water’s edge, the morning sun, views of the beaches – it’s a great way to kick the day off.

“While studying, I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time job as a Student Ambassador with the Uni. I love being able to study and work in the city and if I do have to go to Callaghan, I can just catch the free shuttle bus there,” said Liam.

For the University of Newcastle’s BusCom President Daisy, proximity to local businesses and the collaborative areas NeW Space offers are a major drawcard for the third-year Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Commerce student.

“Being so close local businesses allows me to build relationships and networks more easily.

“It’s a pretty important feature as an (almost) business graduate and means I’m able to meet up with partners at super convenient times.

“NeW Space has a lot of areas which are perfect for teamwork and collaboration – great for holding our BusCom board meetings,” said Daisy.

As for life in between or after class? Both students are making the most of the cafes, gyms and pubs within walking distance.

“The city precinct is brilliant for student life outside study. We are super close to cafes, restaurants, pubs and the beach. It really brings the campus to life.

“In-between classes I meet with friends for lunch or drinks at Hey Zeus, Papas Bagels, Coco Monde, or the Clarendon – there’s so much to choose from,” said Daisy.

“When I have a couple of hours between classes, I’ll often duck across the road and squeeze in a quick gym session at The Forum. It takes me two minutes to walk there, I can do my thing and get back in time to grab a coffee in the NeW Space foyer or duck to Blue Door Café for a feed before my next class,” said Liam.

“At the end of the day I like to stop by my favourite bakehouse and grab a half-priced loaf of bread – the pumpkin sourdough is amazing!

“It’s great studying and working in the city – cars aren’t really needed which makes my life easier and is a lot friendlier to my back pocket. Being a uni student, you have to be resourceful, and the city campus makes this easy because everything is at your fingertips.

“It truly is the Hogwarts of business, law and creative industries,” concluded Liam.

The University of Newcastle’s NeW Space has been uniquely crafted to promote contemporary teaching environments, collaborative and flexible working areas, and social spaces ideal for engaging with community, industry and business.

Combine a balanced lifestyle and undergraduate study at NeW Space, and start your degree in 2019.
