How can anything that is sugar, dairy and gluten free, vegan, paleo proof, organic and nutritious for you taste any good? Well, take a visit to Mama P café in Charlestown and you'll discover for yourself that it's totally possible.

We first visited husband and wife duo Kylie & James Pheils at Mama P in early 2016, two years after the brand was born, which has now expanded greatly with a larger renovated space and even a retail section added to the café.

With so much demand for healthy food and living alternatives, Kylie & James have managed to crack the secret tasty code using only natural wholefood ingredients to create their cafe menu and Newcastles exclusive range of ready made whole raw cakes and award winning desserts.

Their 'why', was because their youngest son suffered asmtha, excema and many allergies. There were hardly any options to eat out or products to buy anywhere so Kylie decided to create her own treats that were healthy, nutritious and that weren't choc-full of additives, junk or preservatives.

This at-home hobby soon out-grew the home kitchen, with word of Mama P's nutritious treats spreading fast! Originally, Kylie and James just wholesaled their products to cafes across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Sydney. But It wasn't long before the couple felt the time was right to create a Mama P café space all of their own.

Kylie wants to spread the message that real foods can taste just as good, if not better, than their traditional counterparts. More importantly, Kylie wanted her boys (and everyone) to understand how much better you feel when you eat real food.

“We focus on hand made fresh produce, no packets, no deep fryers, no processed sugars, no numbers, no gluten, no dairy, no fake foods but 100% amazing flavour and nutrition.”

Because Mama P’s goodies are full of all the good stuff, they are really nourishing and actually fill you up, unlike refined sugar which triggers all the dopamine in the brain and has you hunting for more. 

“Our aim is to provide food that is enjoyable, enhances your health and wellbeing, is affordable and accessible to everyone, whilst tasting amazing at the same time. We believe eating more real, less processed foods is the key to wellness.”

If you're heading along for breakfast and lunch, you can expect not only great natural flavours but also some seriously Instagramable aesthetics. Whether it's a nourish bowl, smoothie bowl, one of their famous waffles, or one of their toasted goodies; nothing has gone amiss when it comes to the flavour or presentation of the food on their menu. 

“A lot of thought, time and taste testing goes into every single product and menu item, so you can rest assured it won't be bland or boring.” 

The Mama P range has grown considerably since their opening, with now not only their delectable healthy treats, their menu full of tasty and nutritious breakfast and lunch options but they've also expanded into a retail space, stocking all the best eco-friendly products you could want for the home.
