For one weekend in June, Lake Macquarie will light up with a flotilla of illuminated boats as part of the annual Float Your Boat Festival. A fleet of local boats adorned with neon lights and themed up to the nines will make their way along the shores of Lake Macquarie on June 28 and 29. Last year there were mermaids, dolphins, turtles and even the Star Wars Millennium Falcon!
Calling all boaties, here’s your chance to be part of the action! You’ll need a boat that’s at least 5 metres long, lots of LED lights and plenty of creative juices.
Plus first 14 boats to register get a free four-hour workshop at Marmong Point Marina, to learn how to decorate their boat. And it includes $100 worth of LED lights to bring your creative ideas to life.
And there are cash prizes to boot:
Now in its third year, Float Your Boat continues to grow each year, with council’s Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism, Jacqui Hemsley, saying more than 17,000 spectators lined the shore of Lake Macquarie over two nights last year to see the flotilla.
This year the flotilla will make their way from Marmong Point Marina along the western side of the lake to Wangi on Friday 28 June. Followed by the eastern side of the lake from Marmong Point Marina to Belmont 16s on Saturday 29 June.
“We’re calling on our boating community to join us to have some fun, dress up their boats with lights and take part in this fantastic event,” Ms Hemsley said.
“This year we want to see bigger and even more extravagant illumination displays and onshore performances.”
