Unravel Studio

Relax, unwind and be restored at Unravel Studio

Tighes Hill is slowly becoming quite the little community hub with Praise Joe Urban Pantry serving up quality coffee, MiiO providing some of the best home décor pieces from around the globe, and artist collective SMAC Studio moving into the quiet suburb. Now, with the arrival of a brand-new hair salon on the main road, we have no doubt the area will continue to boom.

The enthusiastic 24-year old has bounced around Newcastle in some of the best salons. Spending five years at Newcastle East based Suki to renting a chair over at Mayfield East’s Muster Point to finally launching her own space right in the heart of Tighes Hill.

“As a hairdresser, it’s always on your mind about opening up your own space. I did look at this space ages ago and I thought it was too small. With everything happening with COVID I realised that I didn’t want a big space. My dad and my partner are both builders, so they made this space come to life,” Amelia said.

With a focus on working with your natural hair, Amelia works her magic to bring your hair to life whilst you get to enjoy the relaxing, warm and comfortable environment that is Unravel Studio.

“We like to feel more like a second home than a hair salon. All of our products are sourced as locally, organically and sustainably as possible. Our two biggest beliefs are embracing natural looking hair and relaxing.”

The space, whilst small, packs a punch with every corner filled with intricate details; from the custom-made hair stations and front desk to the products on the shelves and local artist, Lauren Freestone’s artwork on the walls, no detail has gone amiss.

“I was trying to think of the best way to fit it all in the space and the stations made sense. I was looking online for stations but there was nothing that I really loved. I found this one station that was aluminium, and I was going to get my dad and my partner to make the aluminium stations, but obviously being carpenters, they reverted everything back to timber.

“So, we decided to do timber and I had these inspo photos and drawings and they’ve done really well. They were worried that what they were seeing, was not what I was seeing; but we got there in the end and now they’re the statement pieces of the space.”

The fit out itself took five weeks, with Amelia and her hardworking father and partner having their fair share of new business dramas; including the space flooding to getting the wrong basins delivered!

“One day the whole salon flooded. That was a huge nightmare. Lucky none of the furniture was down. It was the day they were making the desk and I walked over to the corner just to see what it looked like and all of this water was just running out of the beauty room…it was a lot of water but luckily nothing got ruined but we just lost a lot of precious time.”

The name, Unravel Studio is the perfect name to showcase the blending together of what Amelia offers as a hairdresser.

“I wanted this space to be relaxing, welcoming, homey; the last thing I wanted it to be was salon. I was looking up synonyms and unravel came up and it was really fitting. I kept coming back to Unravel and chose to go with studios rather than salon and it leaves it more open if the business moves in a different direction.”
