Our guide to the best things to do in Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie might sometimes be thought of as an extension of Newcastle, but it's an expansive area with stacks to do and an identity of its own. The region is abundant with nature, excellent dining, contemporary art, and outdoor activities, so there's something for everyone.

Keen to explore the area? Keep reading for our guide to the best things to do in Lake Macquarie.

1. Get out on the water

This one might seem like a no brainer, but Lake Macquarie truly is a playground for water sports. Whether you take your own boat out and cast a line, go paddle boarding, learn to sail, kayak your way across the lake, or simply take a tour with a company like CoastXP, there's so many ways to see the lake and all of its scenery.

2. Take a dip in the lake

When the warm weather hits, it's time to find a spot to cool off. Unless you're a local, you might not know that there's actually some great swimmings spots in Lake Macquarie itself. Try Belmont Baths for an accessible swimming spot (and keep an eye out for the baths at Toronto foreshore coming mid-2024), Naru Beach for crystal-clear water and white sandy beach, or Pelican Foreshore for a family-friendly swimming and picnicking spot.

3. Visit the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima (MAP mima)

Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima (MAP mima) is a cutting-edge venue that is located right on the shores of Speers Point, offering a high-tech creative canvas for contemporary art. Open Friday to Sunday with extended hours in school holidays, MAP mima pretty much always has something on to explore – make sure you keep an eye on its calendar of events to stay up-to-date.
