Muswellbrook’s iconic Oak Factory to be reinvigorated

The historic Oak factory in Muswellbrook is set for a bold new chapter with Sydney Rum Distillery announcing its takeover of the iconic site. After standing dormant for more than 30 years, the factory will be transformed into a state-of-the-art distillery, marking a significant milestone for both the brand and the Upper Hunter region.

Established in 2015 by David Ward and Chris Middleton, Sydney Rum Distillery has gained a strong foothold in the industry with a globally-focused approach.

Under the leadership of Steve Magarry, the company aims to have the Muswellbrook facility operational by July this year, setting the stage for an exciting future in Australian rum production.

Repurposing the Oak factory is not just about bringing a new business to Muswellbrook – it’s about breathing life into a piece of regional history. Walking through the site is like stepping into a time warp, and the team is embracing its heritage as they work towards making it a global production hub.

Once fully operational, the facility will have the capacity to produce 2.5 million litres of rum per year, significantly boosting regional manufacturing.

Sydney Rum Distillery is committed to sustainability, actively exploring energy-efficient technologies to minimise its environmental impact. The company’s values—sustainability, integrity, responsibility, and inclusion—are deeply embedded in its operations. From fostering community relationships to promoting responsible alcohol consumption, the distillery is dedicated to creating a positive impact.

Looking ahead, the distillery plans to open a destination cellar door in the factory’s heritage rooms, featuring original 1950s-era equipment. While the initial focus is on production, the future vision for the site potentially includes a bar and cafe, further enriching Muswellbrook's tourism appeal.

The reinvigoration of the Oak factory represents not just the revival of a historic landmark but a significant step forward for regional NSW’s manufacturing and export potential. As the countdown to production begins, Muswellbrook is set to become a key player in Australia’s burgeoning rum industry.
