The NRL Women’s Premiership season kicks off on Saturday July 22nd, and with the Newcastle Knights entering as defending champions, following their spectacular 32 - 12 win over the Parramatta Eels in 2022, we took a look at how the season ahead is coming together.

The 2023 playlist has been finalised with NRLW legend Nita Maynard and former Young Matildas captain Sheridan Gallagher signing on for 2023. Nita, a veteran of five seasons and 18 matches at NRLW level, together with Sheridan’s strength and tenacity in defence, is setting the season up as another big one, as Newcastle Knights NRLW head coach Ronald Griffiths explains.

"I am really comfortable with where the squad’s at, it's a really nicely rounded squad in terms of players 1 through to 28, we have no hesitation in using any of them.
“Importantly, we resigned the majority of the local players who grew up in this area and understand what it means to be a Newcastle Knight, we’re really chuffed about that.”

Newcastle and the Hunter region has proven to be a nursery for female rugby league talent, with the pool of quality players growing year on year. Following the success of the 2022 season, Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League has expanded its teams with an extra 884 registered players across the region.

Throughout the state, at the close of the 2022 season, a record 22,906 female participants had registered, an increase of more than 3,000 players from the 2021 season.

NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said, “The growth of the women’s game has been phenomenal, and it is pleasing to see the progress that has been made in establishing pathways from grassroots all the way through to the representative arena. I look forward to watching this space continue to prosper in future years.”
