Check out one of Newcastle's most iconic ocean pools

There are few places in Newcastle that evoke as much nostalgia and community spirit as the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its sweeping Art Deco pavilion and bleachers that have framed countless family days and summer afternoons, the Ocean Baths is a place where Novocastrians have grown up, learned to swim, and created memories for over a century.

Today, after a thoughtful round of upgrades, the baths have emerged refreshed while still retaining their character. The iconic bleachers, curved Art Deco stairs, and starting blocks have all been given a spruce up, bringing new life to the familiar spaces without losing their timeless charm.

A new accessible ramp now leads into the main pool, complemented by an additional set of stairs into the lap pool, ensuring a more inclusive experience for all swimmers. Practical improvements have also been made, with a shade sail on the upper promenade, extra seating along the southern end of the lower promenade, and a new lifeguard hut to enhance comfort and safety.

While the pool itself has been treated with a new coating, the much-loved sandy bottom remains – a detail sure to please regulars who cherish the natural feel of the baths.

Open year-round, except for Wednesdays when they close for cleaning, the Ocean Baths continue to be a place where locals and visitors alike can immerse themselves in Newcastle’s coastal lifestyle. With every upgrade, the baths remain true to their heritage, standing proudly as both a swimming spot and a piece of living history.
