Islington's where it's at for all the laughs in Newcastle
Newcastle has long been known for its vibrant live entertainment scene, think bustling pubs, thriving clubs, and festivals that fill our calendars.
In recent years, the nightlife experience in Newcastle’s CBD has matured, and definitely gotten funnier, thanks largely to the arrival of Newcastle Comedy Club, which helped push the city into an exciting new chapter.

Opening in January 2021, the now much-loved Newcastle Comedy Club has thrived during this time, hosting some of Australia's top comedians, and stars from across the globe.
Now recognised as one of only six authentic comedy clubs in Australia, the venue has become a sought-after spot for comedians wanting to test new material before heading out on major tours.
With a loyal following, and an always quality line-up of comedians, the Newcastle Comedy Club has had a major change.
In January 2026, the venue checked out of Darby Street, and moved to their brand-new space at The Islington Barracks, with opening night on Friday January 16.
The team planned a smooth, seamless transition with comedians continuing to hit the stage until the launch of the new venue, ensuring comedy lovers didn't miss a single laugh.
A perfect new home
Islington Barracks venue kicked off from night one with five nights of comedy each week, and the space itself couldn’t be more ideal.
Formerly a dedicated live entertainment venue, it already has the bones and atmosphere needed for the Newcastle Comedy Club experience. Only minor modifications are required to bring the iconic red-curtain energy back.
Offering seating for up to 120 people, the new location manages to level-up the experience while keeping things wonderfully intimate.
More accessible, more comfortable
One of the biggest improvements? Accessibility. The new venue will offer wheelchair access, easier parking, and a more comfortable flow for guests.
Plus, there will be an onsite bar, with access to the Islington Barracks kitchen, meaning you can settle in for dinner and a show all in one spot.
Still delivering the laughs
The brainchild of co-owners James Connors, Elliott Stewart, and former comedian Allan Brady, Allan described the original vibe as a little dark and dingy, but in the best kind of New York-style way – think chipped tables, warm lights, and a whole lot of character.
From Open Mic Tuesdays to weekend showcases featuring local regulars and touring headliners, including Wil Anderson and Tom Gleeson, who both completed two-week residencies in 2025 – the club’s stellar lineup has built a loyal following and helped shape Newcastle’s growing comedy scene. Sundays will continue to spotlight solo shows from pro comedians, including rising talents like Sarah Gaul (of Netflix’s Hot Mess).
“We’ve got a roster of comics that are really active and high-quality, and we hope the Club continues to foster the local pool of talent,” Allan said.
As a former comedian himself, he knows the importance of stage time.
“When you’re learning, you just need to get up in front of people. The feedback is instant, and brutal, but it’s the only way to really learn the craft.”
Make sure you jump on line to secure you tickets to some big comedian names who are on their way to Newcastle, to experience the new space for yourself.
