Life & Style

The quiet achiever

If you’re a newcomer to Newcastle seeking out a suburb that has a little bit of everything and plenty of life, then let us familiarise you with one of its quiet achievers - Lambton.

Packing some serious punch for such a small suburb, it's more often than not overlooked by locals and visitors alike, on the hunt for more trendier shopping and cafe scenes.

Best known for its generous green spaces and that iconic 19th century rotunda, what the locals love most, and do their best to keep quiet about, is that easily accessible outdoorsy lifestyle we all love. The suburb is also just about to score itself its first boutique residential apartments, 121ELDER, courtesy of local developer and builder GWH, but we'll get to that later.

It's hard to find a reason not to get active, from morning tennis matches, to afternoon laps at Lambton Pool and relaxing evening strolls through the park with your pooch. A cold one at the pub afterwards is always an option, of course four-footed friends are welcome, Lambton Park Hotel just love the pups.

If you love getting out for your morning coffee Lambton has a collective of cafes to choose from, you can even pick up a freshly baked loaf of bread or pastry from Williams Artisan Bread & Espresso. On the ‘I've got it all covered’ Elder St, some long-established local businesses help you tick off your weekly job list, collect your fruit & veg from the Fruit Market, drop into Jarrett's Butchers and grab your groceries from Spar Express.

You can work up a sweat at 12RND, do a spot of shopping for the home or yourself at Sobelle Living and along with all your practical needs being covered from pharmacy to physio, even acupuncture, there's a bunch of takeaway food options should you not be keen on cooking.

By night the collective of hotels are always open, and the live music at Lizotte's, from local nights to international acts, has become a Newcastle institution.

Lambton is also home to an awesome kids playground, undoubtedly Newcastle's most beautiful little library, and a short drive to, well, pretty much everything. Hospitals, the Knights & Jets stadium and University, Westfield Kotara is also just around the corner, and the city, well by car you are there in under 20 mins. Or jump on your bike for a leisurely, by that we mean flat, cruise on Newcastle's cycle paths to town via the harbour.

One aspect to Lambton that comes up quite a lot in conversation is its community spirit. It might sound a little old school but community is what makes living in suburbia all the more enjoyable, and with incredible community-minded businesses such as Lambton Park Tea Rooms and events like Five Senses Twilight Market it’s well and truly alive.

There is also a first for Lambton coming in 2020, 121ELDER is the soon to be boutique residential apartments that local builder and developer GWH have been working on. Mindful of the local setting the property is very much in keeping with the theme of Lambton life. Space has been a priority with each of the 1, 2 & 3 bedroom apartments featuring open plan living and generous sized balconies. Accompanied by modern interiors and secure car parking, all that Lambton has to offer is literally at your doorstep.
