Whale watching guide

The annual pilgrimage sees around about 20,000 humpbacks make their way along our beautiful coastline, you can spot the whales from many of the popular beaches and lookouts in the area

Whilst the cold weather sets in, we can all rejoice about one thing at this time of the year; the 2020 Whale Watching Season is here!

Check out our top picks for whale sighting this season:

Merewether Beach
Sit down and enjoy a coffee at Blue Door Kiosk and watch as the whales get in real close!

Anzac Memorial Walk
The Memorial Walk provides access to one of the most scenic sections of Newcastle's coastal walk and 360-degree views that stretch over the Pacific Ocean and beyond to the Hunter Valley.

Hickson St Lookout
Newcastle's hidden gem of spots for whale watching. Take a picnic along and spend an afternoon looking out for the whales.

Shepherd’s Hill Lookout
Standing tall and overlooking the city of Newcastle, and some of our favourite beaches this has got to be one of the best spots for whale spotting. If you’ve got time and the weathers beautiful, pack a picnic lunch and watch the world (and the whales) go by.

Nobby’s Headland
The southern entrance to Newcastle Harbour that offers sweeping views of the ocean. You might even spot CoastXP out doing its thing.

Fort Scratchley
The site reopens to the public on the 4 July, and could be your best pick for whale spotting. The large grassed headland is ideal for those wanting to enjoy a picnic or take advantage of the panoramic views of the ocean and harbour.

Yuelarbah Walking Track
Once you get through the bushland, you’ll come out overlooking Glenrock Beach and Lagoon, which can often be found almost empty giving visitors the opportunity to have the beach and the views of the ocean to themselves.

Tomaree Head Summit Walk
Once you’ve reached the top, and caught your breath, unparalleled views of the Port Stephens coastline and panoramic north coast await you. If you’re looking for a reason to linger a little longer, pack a hamper and make use of the picnic table and seating at the summit.

Caves Beach
Whilst the Caves are brilliant for exploring, the coastal bushwalk walk from Caves Beach to Pinny Beach offers the most spectacular ocean views; perfect for whale watching season.

If you’re wanting to experience the whales from the water, CoastXP will be running Encounter Tours daily throughout the whale watching season. To book, click here.
