As the cold weather sets in, 20,000 humpback whales make their way along Newcastle and Lake Macquarie's coastline on their northern migration. Luckily, there are plenty of lookouts and beaches where you can whale watch in Newcastle.

Merewether Beach

Sit down and enjoy a coffee at Blue Door Kiosk as you look for whales, or try the viewing platform at the Frederick Street Carpark or the grassy Merewether Lookout just above it.

Anzac Memorial Walk

The Anzac Memorial Walk provides access to one of the most scenic sections of Newcastle's Bather's Way coastal walk and 360 degree views that stretch over the Pacific Ocean and beyond to the Hunter Valley.

Hickson Street Lookout 

Enjoy spectacular south-facing views of the ocean at Hickson Street Lookout. Take a picnic along and spend an afternoon looking out for whales. 

Nobbys Beach and Headland

The southern entrance to Newcastle Harbour offers sweeping views of the ocean. Head up to the Lighthouse Grounds which are open 8am–4pm every Saturday and Sunday for a high vantage point.

Shepherd’s Hill Lookout

Standing tall overlooking the city of Newcastle and some of our favourite beaches, Shepherd's Hill Lookout has to be one of the best spots for whale spotting. Pack a picnic lunch and watch the world (and the whales) go by.

Fort Scratchley

The large grassed headland at Fort Scratchley is open six days a week from 10am–4pm (closed Tuesdays). It's ideal for those wanting to enjoy a picnic or take advantage of the panoramic views of the ocean and harbour.  

Bombala Walking Track

Make your way through this peaceful bush walking track that ends at the secluded Dudley Beach, and keep an eye out for whales when you catch glimpses of the ocean along the way.

Redhead Lookout

Are you a Lake Macquarie local? Head to Redhead Lookout and enjoy stunning views over Redhead Beach as you watch whales head past the bluff.

Stockton

Try Stockton Beach or Stockton Breakwall for whale watching at the northern entrance to Newcastle Harbour. Keep an eye out for shipwrecks on the breakwall walk too!

Newcastle Beach

Newcastle Beach has plenty of vantage points to look for whales. Perch yourself on the steps below The Kiosk, at the lookout facing south just above Newcastle Baths, or overlooking the ocean at Fletcher Park. 

Bogey Hole

Taking in the spectacular Bogey Hole on your coastal walk? Try hanging around to watch for whales as the swim past the coastline.

Bar Beach

The viewing platform at the top of Bar Beach, just underneath the carpark, is an ideal spot to catch sight of whales on their northern migration. When you're done whale watching, sit back on the grass with a picnic. 

Yuelarbah Walking Track

Once you get through the bushland of the Yuelarbah Walking track, you’ll pop out on Glenrock Beach, which can often be found almost empty – giving you the opportunity to have the beach and the views of the ocean to yourself.

Caves Beach

While the caves are brilliant for exploring, the coastal walk from Caves Beach to Pinny Beach offers the most spectacular ocean views – perfect for whale watching season.
