Demolition marks the beginning of a new chapter for Queens Wharf West.
Queens Wharf West is about to enter its next chapter, with demolition work set to begin in July.
The move follows the final tenants leaving the building, with Keolis Downer ferry staff relocating across the harbour to a new Stockton-based site office.
The Queens Wharf precinct has been part of Newcastle’s waterfront since opening in 1988 as a Bicentennial project, and while the Queens Wharf Hotel will remain, the western building, vacant since a fire in 2020, will now be demolished.
Work will begin inside and around the building before moving through the main structure from west to east and top to bottom. Demolition is expected to take around six months, depending on weather and site conditions.
Wharf Road will stay open to vehicles, although the western car park will be fenced off during the works, with detours in place for walkers and cyclists. Access to the ferry wharf may change at times, but Stockton ferry services are expected to continue as normal.
What comes next for the site is still to be decided, with Council expected to make that call in the 2026/27 financial year. The wider revitalisation has already received strong community support, with almost 1,800 comments and suggestions submitted during consultation and 97% backing the overall vision for the project.
