Australian made woollen knitwear at its most wearable
When you hear the word knitwear your mind may wander back to the 80’s and 90’s when wool reigned and when it was cool to be seen in a cardi.
Fashion does have a habit of repeating itself, and whilst we’re happy to see those 80’s & 90’s designs remain in the closet, we were excited to meet Ali Wanchap Wood, who from her Newcastle home has created the beautiful knitwear brand Jude Australia.
On meeting Ali first thoughts were how well Jude stands out in a crowd and this wasn't how we remember knitwear looking. Over tea and a latte Ali chats about her current collection. Nowhere to be seen are those baggy oversized sweaters or cringe worthy colours and patterns. Instead classic cuts and beautiful designs that wouldn’t look out of place around the home or paired smartly with your favourite designer jeans.
So why wool? A product that has a tendency to be seen as being a bit daggy and kitsch. Well quite simply Ali says "It’s what I grew up with".
Ali's grandmother was a knitter and passed on those skills to Ali at a young age. There were also those days spent on the farm and at country shows which resonated with Ali so much so that after years of working in the fashion industry Ali decided it was time to escape, and create her own label.
Ali wasn’t looking to create anything excessively edgy or trendy, instead, inspired by family heritage and a proud history that the Australian wool industry has, Ali could think of no other product she would prefer to work with than wool.
Working with only the finest merino, Jude Australia covers men & women’s fashion, bubs and homewares, each as beautiful as the other, Ali says,
"Whilst I would like to take the credit for the range I have collaborated with local illustrator Alexandra Kachel and design agency Neon Zoo to create the gorgeous designs".
Designs now that can be found in International departure lounges around Australia and a handful of boutiques up and down the eastern coast of Australia.
The stunning neutral tones of Jude combined with the fine woollen textures are closet keepers and destined to remain in your collection for many years to come.
