2019, the year that brought a lot of ups as well as a lot of downs. The city saw a lot of changes with the arrival of the light rail, the closure of many favourite venues and the opening of some exciting new ones!
We waved goodbye to some of our favourite venues such as the Flying Tiger, Pork Ewe’s Darby St store, Reserve Bar, Bonta Vera, and Screemin’ Veemis; just to name a few.
But we also greeted some newbies. From the foodie scene we said hello to the recently opened Signal Box and Earp Distilling as well as already local favourites Edmonds & Co in the East End, Flotilla in Wickham as well as Besties, New Slang Coffee Brewers, Chicken Cartel and Bella Italia.
HUNTERhunter even held their first ever event this year, The Dessert Bar, which was a real hit!
So, what exactly kept you guys interested in all the happenings across Newcastle this year? We’ve done the numbers and have found your Top 20 articles for 2019! Did any of your favs make the list?
20. Blue Kahunas
Lucky last, but certainly not least is Newcastle’s very own Tiki Bar; Blue Kahunas. Only recently celebrating their first birthday it gives us all the happy feels to know that they’re still amongst the favs!
House Proud made a comeback in 2019 and we’re psyched to see that our most recent article on the historical Merewether home, Gow House made this list.
What is it about a beer garden that we love so much? Whatever it is, this list of Newcastle’s top beer gardens has been mighty popular, and with us going into the warmer months, we’re pretty sure it’s not going to be slowing down any time soon!
17. Mr Bui’s
Another 2019 newbie, Mr Bui’s has only been bringing their Vietnamese eats to Westfield’s Rooftop since November.
A celebration of all things Newcastle, Homegrown became the place to shop local maker stalls, take part in workshops, taste deliciousness local eateries, enjoy the live music all coming at you with an eco focus.
The Newcastle fav for Mexican food is constantly sitting near the top of our searches. Turns out we love our tortillas!
14. Eight Buns
Can you ever have too many dumplings? The answer is no; the limit does not exist. Dumpling lovers out there searching for a dumpling or two should give Eight Buns on Beaumont Street a visit!
13. Milky Lane
Iconic Milky Lane from Bondi finally opened up a restaurant in Newcastle and turns out you guys are loving it!12. Bella Italia
Come February 2020, we’ll have had access to this fav entertainment venue for one whole year! It’s hype certainly hasn’t slowed down and it’s still our personal number one bowling alley!
Parents of young ones can finally enjoy the best of both worlds; stay social and keep the kids happy with these venues perfect for all the family.
We love knowing you guys are excited about exploring not only Newcastle but all of our wonderful surrounds as well. How many of these walking trails have you ticked off the list?
8. The Corner
Another surprise on the top 20 list, with The Corner only opening to the public just weeks ago. We shouldn’t be too surprised though, as it’s the new home to some of our local favourites such as Rascal, Napoli, Bao Brothers and Popolo!
7. Ginger Megs
Always busy and always googled by the looks of things! The Asian inspired cocktail bar and restaurant has clearly made an impression on the people of Newcastle
and we’re glad to hear it.
The long-awaited renos were unveiled to the public in September. With the complete re-brand, refurb and relocation we’re not surprised this was amongst the favs for the year.
So, do you guys like your coffee or what? This article was so popular we can’t wait to do it again next year! Well done to Mr. Sister for topping the list for 2019!
We say yes to Yum Cha! Hong Kong Chef on Kotara’s Rooftop has brought more than 150 handmade dim sims, dumplings, rice rolls, soups, and Hong Kong BBQ
dishes to town.
3. Signal Box
Again, another pleasant surprise to be found near the top of our top list! Opening at the start of December, it’s bounced right up to the top in record
time and we have to say, it’s blooming fantastic!
This one was QUITE the surprise to be seen nearing the top of the list, as they literally only opened their doors in October just gone. Well done boys, the 90s vibes are a hit!
And the No.1 goes to the guys at Flotilla. They can do no wrong with The Criterion Hotel, The Edwards and now Flotilla under their belt, it’s no surprise to find this incredible little restaurant in Wickham at the top!
Whilst it’s been one hell of a year for Newcastle, we’re excited for what’s to come for 2020!
