Macarons, cupcakes and cookie bombs are all you need in lifeSee our handpicked guides to Newcastle
Fifi La Femme may sound more like a 1920’s burlesque dancer than a macaron and cupcake bar, and if you ask owner Mara Lang you’ll learn that’s exactly the point.
The name, and that lovely lady logo, came about from Mara wanting to merge the French flair of those illustrious macarons, the curves and sultriness of Nigella together with the character and colour of Islington, where their bakery is also located. And after a bit of exploring the world of burlesque, Mara discovered Fifi was the obvious choice.
So how did it all begin for Fifi La Femme? Before arriving in Newcastle Mara and husband Andrew were living in Canada working crazy hours in their bangin’ late night restaurant in Vancouver. However with a bub on the way they decided it was time to pack up and move to Australia to raise the family. Before long Mara and Andrew began baking up their own sweet little business.
Starting out at the markets Mara and Andrew soon gathered a troupe of followers, just two years on they opened their first shop.
Now in two locations, Level G and Level 2, in Charlestown Square it’s fair to say Fifi La Femme stands out amongst the crowd. With its fresh white décor the colourful flavours of the macarons, cupcakes, brownies and cookie bombs bring Fifi La Femme to life. So much so it’s difficult not to stop and pick yourself up a tasty treat.
In addition to the cakes and cookies there is Glee Coffee, homemade retro milkshakes, gourmet toasties, freshly baked muffins and croissants, old school sundaes and did we mention those macarons? They are the bomb!
