We heard rumours that something spectacular was brewing away on the banks of the Brisbane River. Keen to check out what was taking shape, we decided to take advantage of those cheap $61^ mid-week flights out of Newcastle Airport and treat ourselves to a pre-chrissy Brisbane escape and see what all the fuss is about.

Felons Brewing Co

The Howard Smith Wharves, which are located beneath the Story Bridge on the banks of the Brisbane River, was our destination, with the once derelict site now being the talk of the town.

Originally built to provide relief work for locals throughout the depression in the 1930s, the now heritage listed structures have largely been abandoned since the 60s. However, with a whole lot of love being poured back into the 3.4 hectare site, the Howard Smith Wharves are being transformed into an incredible lifestyle and entertainment precinct that you are going to want to visit.

Due for completion in early January the space is taking shape with cycle and walkways now open along the Brisbane River, a collective of bars, restaurants and function spaces are only weeks away, and a five-star 164-room boutique hotel called The Fantauzzo is set to open in March. Oh and let's not forget, Felon's Brewing Co. which was the purpose of our flight.

Now officially open for business Felon's Brewing Co. is a massive brewery and restaurant space that is simply incredible!

Busy with business people and travellers by day, by night the space brings a totally different, but still relaxed eating and drinking vibe. The ultra open interior design, only a small fence (for safety reasons) separates the brewery from guests, ensures every part of the brewery is on display, including the galley and kitchen. The menu is mostly about the woodfired pizzas but you will, of course, find burgers, seafood and your Angus Rib Eye or Short Rib keeping all you meat lovers happy.

The beers, well we're not craft beer connoisseurs so you'll have to book a flight and make your own mind up. Felons does, however, cater to everyone from the beer novice through to the beer expert, we mostly stuck with the Pale Ale and there were no complaints from us.

Chatting with Head Brewer Tom Champion, Tom explained that the beer philosophy of Felons Brewing Co. has largely taken inspiration from their location and the brewers' passion for beer, with Tom saying,

“We’re focusing on brewing natural and balanced beers of no fuss, and we won’t compromise when it comes to quality and consistency. We are really conscious of keeping our impact on the planet as low as possible – during my many years in brewing I’ve learnt the little things count as much as the big initiatives.”

If you prefer to keep things even more relaxed you can head out to The Boatyard, throw down a picnic rug and order yourself some traditional fish n' chips with your beers and soak up those views of the Storey Bridge.

For anyone familiar with Brisbane and the once lifeless site you are going to be more than pleasantly surprised with the Howard Smith Wharves bringing an awesome atmosphere back to the CBD.
