The Islington-based venue with a heart of gold is now serving up hearty meals
A little over six months ago, HUNTERhunter wandered into an exciting new space that opened up on Maitland Road in Islington. Filled with colour, fun, games, and an overarching superhero theme, The Wonder Mates Café was well and truly brought to our attention.
Now, not even a year later we drop by to chat to the ever-so-lovely owner, Kamila McIntyre to hear all about how the last six months have been, what the Wonder Mates Café team have been up to, and of course, to taste test their new breakfast menu.
The nostalgic 90s themed café has been bringing through the fans through in droves. Whether it’s the young ones keen to see their favourite superhero on the wall or the Friends fanatics keen for a coffee at Central Perk; everyone is giving The Wonder Mates a try.
One thing they’ve slowly but surely been growing on is their foodie offering. Starting with your usual café picks like the toasties and croissants, they’ve just launched a new mouth-watering all-day breakfast menu which is sure to pack a punch for all the foodies out there.
The Vegan Breakfast made with beans, tomato, avocado, sourdough, vegan halloumi, and a meatless farm sausage and the Vegan Bliss Bowl has been hitting the spot with our local vegans. The colourful and moreish Belgian Waffle topped with seasonal berries, jam, and cream has also been a crowd favourite for both the youngins as well as us oldies.
The newest beverages to hit the menu include the Vancouver invention; The London Fog made with Earl Grey Tea and a hint of vanilla brewed in silky milk, and the Newie Chai Tea made with local Gingerbread Chai from The Tea Collective over milk and a sweet hint of honey.
If you love a sweet treat, you’ve also got the check out the milkshake offerings including the absolutely divine Biscoff Milkshake and the classic Oreo Milkshake – YUM!
Of course, you can still get your hands on all the usual Wonder Mates Café goodies including the Poppy Seed Bagel with smashed avo (with bagel direct from the famous Brooklyn Bagels), tradie favourite the Bacon and Egg Roll and for the afternoon tea lovers, Scone with cream and jam!
If you’re heading in-store, there’s a good chance you might have spotted one of these superhero boxes and thought, hmm, what exactly are these about? Well, it’s a cause very close to Kamila called Supertee; a project creating medical garments for sick kids in hospital, disguised as a superhero costume.
“The guy who created this has a daughter and she had cancer. It was really hard to hygiene her in the gown, so he created this gown. It looks like a superhero, but it also opens under the arms and down the sides so it’s easy to take on and off.
“We have them on display here in the shop and we also have a donation box. So, you don’t have to purchase the whole box you can just make a small donation.”
The boxes include either a male or female gown as well as a comic book, a bookmark with a special message and for those who purchase the whole box, you can even write a special message for the recipient!
“We sell them here and then they go to the John Hunter Hospital. His goal is for every child in the John Hunter Hospital to have one of these.”
Things really start to ramp up at The Wonder Mates Café when the weekends kick into gear. With activities happening each and every weekend and special visitors with the likes of Superman, Snow White, Buzz Lightyear, Spiderman, The Hulk, Batman, and Captain America amongst those that have dropped in!
Alongside balloon art, storytime, wand making, and all sorts of activities, The Wonder Mates Café also donates 10% of all coffee sales to Supertee; how great is that!
During the week, Kamila keeps the activities kicking on with Thursday evenings dedicated to games night!
“So, on Thursdays, we have game night and on Wednesdays, we have a night just for the queer babes of Newcastle. We drink tea, play games, and socialise!”
For those of you that have had the chance to already pop into the Islington space, don’t forget to check in and see what’s new! For those of you who haven’t yet had the chance to experience the welcoming environment on Maitland Road, make sure you take the time to do so - you won’t be disappointed!
