If you’ve ever wanted to go back to simpler times when the sitcom Friends was playing on repeat on the old square TV set, you’d spend lunchtime at school playing handball, Nokia’s brick phone and a Discman were the coolest gadgets around, a visit to the newly opened café on Maitland Road is sure to transport you back in time.

Complete with a replica Central Perk café wall, superhero comics, and all the 90s paraphernalia you can imagine, Wonder Mates Café is the culmination of hard work Brazilian born comic-book lover, Kamila McIntyre.

“I always had this thing in me that I wanted to have my own business and my own space. Both of my parents are entrepreneurs and my siblings are all ridiculously impressive. I came to Australia to pursue hospitality and then that turned into business and administration which then turned into leadership and management and surprisingly this all came together.”

“I’ve always wanted to have a café. It’s always seemed like such a faraway dream; I didn’t think I would be here now,” Kamila said.

After eight months of behind the scenes work, the space officially opened up shop on 25th August, with the Wonder Mates Café being a huge crowd-pleaser for those who love a trip down memory lane.

“Eight months ago I started doing my business plan. I worked on that for a couple of weeks before I started looking at places. Surprisingly, during my first week of looking at places, I found this place. I was meant to look at one in Darby, but the real estate agent said they had the perfect spot for me in Islington. It was a concrete box with nothing in it, but the landlord said just go for it – do whatever you want.”

The cosy nook of a café is filled to the brim with bright colours, superheroes donning the walls, childhood trinkets like the iconic slinky, board games such as Guess Who, and of course; its very own arcade machine.

“I want to take people back to simpler times. I want them to come in here and forget about Corona, forget about their problems, eat good food and have a good time.”

On the menu, you can expect some of your café favourites like the ham and cheese croissant, but it’s the Brazilian goodies that you’ve got to try! The Brazilian Empada and Two Lovers are our picks!

The coffee is sure to hit the spot with any coffee lovers around town and with tea supplied from the Tea Collective; you know it’s going to be good.

This truly is a café unlike any other, but the reason behind the theme of the café is close to owner Kamila’s heart.

“I was at a stage of my life a few years ago where my health, both physical and mental was really low. The thing that literally saved me, was not psych or tablets or doctors, yes they help of course, but the most beneficial thing was to walk down to the comic book shop and look find a book on Wonder Woman.

“Those powerful messages in those books said something to me. I then became obsessed with anything superhero related, and I wanted to go to a time where things were simpler, easier, and happier. So, things like Friends, games, and references that are going to make me happy and make me happy and remind me of good times.”
