Bar Beach community coffee spot gets a refresh
Since 2018, the Bar Beach community alongside those who frequent that stretch of our Bathers Way walk have been well caffeinated and well fed with the help of the caravan set-up within the Bar Beach Bowling Club’s carpark.
Formerly known as The Globetrotter, the old-school renovated caravan has recently undergone some cosmetic changes and has come into its own with a rebrand to The Van at Bar Beach.
We caught up with owner, Scott, to hear about the business’ journey to get to where it is today.
Hailing from Glasgow, Scotland, and with a background in project management within the construction industry, can you believe that Scott had never even poured a coffee before deciding to launch the business?!
“Before we opened all those years ago, I had the coffee machine set up in the garage trying to master how to make a coffee. Then I thought stuff it, let’s do it! So, we did and we’re still here,” Scott said.
Having called Newcastle home for the past seven years, Scott still has one of the thickest Scottish accents you’ll find across town. Pair this with his can-do attitude, community-loving enthusiasm, and his now coffee game mastery, The Van at Bar Beach has built its reputation as one of our best coastal coffee spots.
“We use Sprocket beans. We’ve got a brilliant relationship with them, and we’ve used them from the start. The team has been nothing short of amazing.”
On weekdays you’ll find a line forming before the coffee machine has even turned on, with faithful regulars dropping in for their coffee fix and beach views each and every day.
“I remember when I came to the Bowling Club for the first time, one of the board members had said, ‘are you sure you want to sell coffee out of a van here?’ I had a strong vision and thought I could make it work. And I have and have grown it to what it is today.”
With all of your typical coffee offerings, alongside a small selection of sweets and grab n’ go style food options, The Van at Bar Beach is a great spot for a coffee on the go or just as an excuse to slow down and enjoy our coastal views.
