The Umbrian

A focus on amazing coffee and delicious Italian food

It is often said that simplicity is key, and that is exactly what makes this coffee shop on Hunter Street destined for success. With a focus on good coffee and delicious food, two Italian sisters, Olivia and Daniella, have finally embarked on a life long dream to open their own cafe.

The Umbrian is dedicated to their parents who were born in the Italian province of Umbria and who later relocated to Newcastle.

From the food to the interiors the entire business is built on a collaboration of the whole family. Elisha, who helps her mum and aunty run the business, tells us that for her growing up “food is what we would gather around…Umbrian is like stepping into our world.”

The small menu focuses on freshly made, tasty Italian flavours specialising in piadini (handmade Italian flatbread) and delicious sweets; think ricotta filled cannoli and ricotta cake Yum!

The Piadini is made to order with the choice of a meat (or go vegetarian), a cheese and a garnish. All the ingredients are seasonal, simple and have been handpicked to ensure that the strong Italian flavours are at the basis of every order. Barista Ben, who they claim has now been adopted into the family, has had lots of experience and pours a mean coffee.

Umbrian’s interior is an open, modern space with a warm and welcoming feel. The coffee shop itself only takes up the forefront of the building space, with plans to have people rent out the back for different events or workshops in the future.

Umbrian is stripping the idea of a coffee shop back to its basics. The simple space design and menu offers a relaxed area to meet friends, grab a morning coffee or order lunch during the working week.
