The Fernery

Coffee carts and food. Simple but delicious.

Is this Newcastle's most relaxed (and delicious) coffee & lunchtime venue?

Islington. We love this suburb. It's a bit rough around the edges, flies way under the radar and now we have another reason to drop in, and it's called The Fernery.

Located on Fern St, which explains the name, The Fernery is a little side project of those ultra-talented, and obviously not busy enough, sisters from High Tea With Mrs Woo. We've met Angela, Rowena and Juliana many times over the years, but mostly the topics of conversation have centred around fashion, homes or just life and living in Newcastle.

Dropping into The Fernery to chat to Ange the conversation was a little different this time, Ange explains,

"Rowena's husband (artist Brett McMahon) works out of one of the studios at the back of the property and the front area, where we've now set up The Fernery, was just an empty space. We couldn't just leave it blank - it felt like a perfect space to connect with our neighbourhood, so we decided to create an area where coffee vans and food trucks could set up each Friday."

"We spend a lot of time in the area, our workshop is only up the road and we're always at Islington park with the kids, and we wished there was somewhere close by that you could easily get a coffee and food from with the kids in tow. So we decided to create something for us and the community.

"There's a lot of workers around here as well as families, people walking to Hamilton station, TAFE students and groups of bike riders... so we felt like there was a need for something casual that would cater to everyone.

"The food trucks will vary and we plan on introducing workshops and events, neighbourhood potlucks and all sorts of other things into the space over time to provide a creative community gathering place."

With Retro Kombi serving coffee in the morning and Red Belly Gourmet dishing out the lunch menu on the day of our visit it was easy to understand why a constant stream of locals were wandering in, that Pulled Slow Roasted Lamb with Hummus, Pickled Beets, Greens and Toasted Sourdough was seriously delicioius.

The combination of greenery, shade sails, stools and pallet tables has created a comfy and social eating/drinking space that allows you to settle in or is equally as perfect for a quick bite if you're on the run.
