The end of an era for one of Newcastle's much-loved restaurants
After 27 years the Surtaj family are retiring, closing the doors to one of our favourite restaurants. Their final day of trade will be July 2, so make sure you visit before their final service to celebrate the end of an era.
Owned and run by the Thakur family, Surtaj Indian is without a doubt one of our favourite restaurants, with dad Ramesh in the kitchen and Meera and Arjun (mother and son) waiting the tables. Ramesh and Meera are originally from New Delhi, where Ramesh worked as a chef at the renowned 5-star hotel, The Oberoi. Here he learnt his trade as a chef, working alongside some of India’s best chefs perfecting his Indian cooking style and culinary skills. All of which was put to good use when the family moved to Australia, and later opened Surtaj in 1995.
Hidden away, upstairs on Hunter Street, Surtaj is our go-to restaurant! It's spacious, it's super kitsch, it's great for large groups and the food is always spot on.
Their northern Indian cuisine is delicious! The most popular dishes on the menu are the chicken surtaj (butter chicken), beef vindaloo for those who like it hot and the saag paneer, a vegetarian favourite.
I always order the saag paneer, fish anarkali, mango chicken and a garlic naan. Surtaj are known for their naans, which are bit more fluffy than you’ll find elsewhere, making them perfect for mopping up a curry.
They are BYO for wine, so bring along your favourite wine, or order a Kingfisher beer.
