It was a little over two years ago that we caught up with Danny and Emily, the fresh owners of Parry St’s go-to coffee haunt, Sherwood Coffee. Now, in 2021, the pair have not only one, not two, but now three venues across Newcastle hoping to double that by year’s end.

The friendly vibes continued when the coffee brand extended their offering over the road across from the Parry St BP. With Sherwood Coffee number two in full swing, the dedicated team continued their iconic coffee from just a hole-in-the-wall offering.

“Our drive-by was initially opened just to help us with the food prep and storage space, but now it holds its own,” Danny said.

Since then, the close-knit Sherwood team has been busy keeping their eyes on the next big project, and before long they had their hands on the New Lambton space on Alma Rd; what some might remember as Black Circle Café.

Their signature look took over the space façade and quickly became a talking point for New Lambton residents, myself included!

Continuing with their consistently good coffee, fun yet relaxed vibes, fantastic food, and fast service, Sherwood Coffee New Lambton brings the brand round to three venues!

“Whilst we continue to grow, it’s important to us to we retain our 'small' attitude. We’re a local family business and we both work the business behind the scenes in partnership with our teams. Emily even manages to squeeze in a couple of shifts on the machine each week!”

Whether you’re dining in, picking up a coffee, or a to-go item from the menu; all of Sherwood’s venues have you covered. Get your hands on Sherwood’s famous Rueben toasties, the house blend coffee, fresh juices, and the summer favourite; Açai bowls!

The all-day breakfast menu features all the traditional Aussie favourites like the Avo Smash complete with avocado, feta, sundried tomato pesto, rocket, lemon, and toasted seeds served on sourdough (a personal fav). As well as Banana Bread, Bacon & Egg Rolls (which are only $6 every day may I add), and Vego Rolls made with egg, halloumi, avocado, spinach, and chilli relish.

From the toastie menu, you can of course expect the Sherwood signature The Reuben with pastrami, sauerkraut, cheddar, pickles, and house specialty Russian sauce. Alongside Danger Mouse, made with leg ham, house onion jam, and cheddar, as well as a Vegan Toastie, Chicken Toastie, and even a Kids Toastie.

The menu list goes on with burger offerings available from 10.30am-12pm, Mon-Sun, as well as a range of croissants, Açai Bowl offerings, hot drinks, chilled coffee, fresh juices, smoothies, milkshakes, sweet treats, and of course; kombucha!

As the brand grows, Danny and Emily are working alongside their enthusiastic team to bring them into the business.

“As we grow, we’re working with our key team members and giving them the chance to come into the business. We want to partner with our great staff when opening new locations and give them opportunities that they may not have found previously in the coffee game.”

For instance, those of you who frequent the OG Sherwood venue will have no doubt have had a coffee served to you by the ever so friendly head barista Jayson. Whilst he’ll still be slinging coffees every morning, he’s also taken on the role of Head of Coffee; taking on training and recruiting the best baristas across Newcastle. 

Those that have dropped into Sherwood Coffee in New Lambton will have no doubt been served by Jaz! Whom originally was the manager at the OG Sherwood, has now taken over a part-owner role of the New Lambton space. 

“Our team is our strength, and we want to reward that. During COVID, with a new baby at home who had been in the NICU for weeks, Emily and I practically locked down. Our team really stepped up and we are amazed at what they did then and continue to do now.”

Whilst we thought three venues were exciting, the Sherwood Coffee team has only recently announced they’re soon to be opening up space number four! Where are they headed? Drumroll please… KOTARA!

That’s right, Kotara residents will no longer have to head into Parry St to find a park or find an excuse to head out to New Lambton to enjoy a Sherwood coffee. Setting up shop on the strip of shops on Joslin St, it’s going to be exactly what you can expect; almost a copy-paste from their OG and New Lambton spots.

“We’re so excited to have all of this growth happening within the business. So much so, that we’re hoping to reach six locations across Newcastle by the end of 2021!”
