Newcastle coffee legends open in Kahibah
That’s right, the Newcastle coffee legends behind the local favourite, Sherwood Coffee, have expanded into Lake Macquarie opening up in Kahibah.
Brought to us once more by the coffee-loving couple Danny & Emily, as well as bringing in the ever-so-cheerful (and equally coffee-loving) Jayson to round out the team.
For those who have followed Sherwood since their inception, you’ll recognise Jayson from his original head barista role at the OG Parry St space to the Head of Coffee role which has seen him bounce across all venues since early last year.
“Just like we did with Sherwood Coffee in New Lambton, we’re teaming up with the key players to give them bigger opportunities within the business. We are avoiding spreading ourselves too thin and will continue to bring more and more of our key team members into ownership roles in the business,” Danny said.
Having been with the business since 2021, Jayson, forever passionate about coffee has always seen working with Sherwood as part of a bigger career decision.
“I’ve always wanted to play a bigger role in the Sherwood, and Danny always knew I wanted to as well. I would always hint that I wanted to be a part of something bigger. Every conversation we had; I would slip something in at every chance. We would joke about things, and I would say, oh I’m the best partner you’ve ever had, eh? Just all those sly little comments.
“Then he said, if you’re actually serious about it, you should go out and have a look at some locations. At that point, I still wasn’t sure if he was serious, I thought he was just joking with me. We originally started location scouting and found the space down on the corner, and he said, no seriously Jayson, do you actually want to get in on this one,” Jayson shared.
Having obviously said yes, the crew got the ball rolling and by 1st of November 2021, Sherwood Coffee Kahibah was slinging out takeaway coffees from their courtyard whilst they awaited renovations to be completed.
“I’ve always been a part of when the venues opened up, but it’s been really fun to be a part of the whole new venue process.”
Finishing the final touches, the newcomer to Kahibah officially opened their doors on the 27th of December just in time for summer!
Continuing with their iconic style, Sherwood Coffee Kahibah still features the signature Sherwood look with lots of timber accents and soft furnishings throughout. Located on the corner of Glebe and Hexham St. in Kahibah, the Sherwood signage is easy to spot from either direction.
On a sunny day, head outside to their cosy courtyard space and take in the lush greenery dotted throughout, pull up a stool at the window and watch as the team prepare the signature Sherwood dishes, sit out on the footpath and watch the world go by or head inside to a fresh open space with seating options by the café space.
“Being a little further out from Newcastle, we wanted it to be more of a destination that people will want to come out to. Where people want to come for the afternoon, get some cool menu items, to catch up and relax. We’ve really made a few spots throughout where you can cosy up and settle in.”
Featuring a tasty menu with plenty of options to keep you settled in for long brunch catchups or lazy Sunday morning breakfast, the Kahibah space has all your usual Sherwood Coffee favourites including toasties and grab ‘n go items but also a more expansive breakfast menu and even some burgers!
“It’s more like your New Lambton-styled offering. Because it’s in the suburbs, we wanted it to be more of a sit-down kind of location as opposed to grab and go. Which the menu has reflected. We’ve gone into it with that kind of philosophy in mind and it’s just grown from there.”
From the brekky menu, our suggestions are The Benny Scramble with scrambled eggs, bacon, spinach, hollandaise sauce, smoked paprika, served on a toasted croissant and the iconic Aussie brunch fav, Avo Smash with avocado, feta, sundried tomato pesto, rocket, lemon, and toasted seeds on sourdough loaf.
You can also get your hands around the three burger offerings; Beef & Bacon Burg, Schnitty Burg, and Cheeseburg, all of which come with a side of thick-cut chips; yum!
Having launched the Sherwood Bakehouse at their Kotara location late last year, you can also expect to see a rotating range of baked goods in their cabinet available day in and day out.
For those wanting their coffee and food on the go or are still cautious when it comes to eating out, Sherwood Coffee has a kerbside pick-up option on their app so you can get your goods delivered directly to your car.
