Schilly Street Jesmond

Unique Thai fusion flavours have arrived at Jesmond

If it’s not the glowing neon sign or the familiar friendly faces, it’s the smell that pulls you in. The husband and wife team, Rocki and Lou, are back at it again opening their second store at Jesmond Shopping centre, bringing a unique innovative flavour to the locals of Newcastle.

Opening at the beginning of December the store has the trademark Schilly bright neon signs and a must-see mural, with Lou and Rocki creating the perfect grab and go experience for those on the run.

“This is more of a drop-in, grab and go situation, hence why we don’t need a lot of seating space. We find Charlestown as more of an experience, you go shopping all day and you come and have lunch and a beer or come for dinner and enjoy the entertainment,’’ Lou says.

Originally going to see a different space at the centre, they were suggested shop 75 and it was a match made in food heaven.

“We are lucky to have quite a good following through Charlestown and people have already shown a lot of interest saying they live close by or it’s a more convenient location”

Sticking to their original much-loved menu, the couple is looking at bringing in a 'Wrap of the Week' to spice things up.

“This is something that we have dabbled with and they have gone gangbusters, we are looking at focusing the wraps on a different country each week to bring a different flavour from around the world."

For newbies who haven’t visited the store before, Lou recommends the Roti wrap’s which you can’t buy anywhere else.

“The Roti wraps are a really unique concept, the flavour is something that you really can't get anywhere else, and that’s our point of difference at the market’s as well. We're lucky to have Rocki, who is a Thai Chef and has a very unique palate. Rocki puts so much flavour into our dishes and knows how to balance the flavours.

and what is Lou’s personal favourite?

“I’m bias, I love a bit of chilli and the Me So Schilly is one of my favourites, I think that’s got some pretty good flavours but then again our original is the most popular one. We also try to cater for everyone so if somebody doesn’t like spice, we have the sticky wrap as well.”

Their market food truck adventures are also back up and running appearing at homegrown’s market’s at Speer’s Point on a fortnightly basis.

“We love it, we love doing the markets that’s where we started, we love being able to see different faces and people are really willing to try new food at the markets which is really cool.”
