New Shanghai has been a regular on the Newcastle foodie scene since it opened in 2010. Known for their authentic Chinese cuisine and those oh so tasty dumplings prepared fresh right before your eyes.
Situated on the South Piazza, outside Charlestown Square, New Shanghai is a great place to go after a movie, a round of mini golf or a big day of shopping.
The menu offers a delicious range of Shanghai-style soups, noodles, rice and vegetable dishes and dumplings.
I personally can’t go past the pan-fried pork dumplings with their crunchy pastry, and moist pork filling. Other menu favourites are the steamed vegetable dumplings or buns, pan-fried pork buns and mini pork wonton soup.
From the front of the restaurant, you’ll be mesmerised, watching specialty soup dumplings being made before your eyes. They make it look so easy! These soup dumplings are definitely a must order; they have a hot broth inside them, which is delicious but can be dangerous to the unaccustomed. So, make sure you pierce the dumplings with your chopsticks before devouring them!
