You read that correctly, the local coffee legends behind Josie Coffee have opened up a second café space a little closer to Newcastle in the ever-so-vibrant suburb of Mayfield!

We only caught up with the team in June last year, following their opening of Gateshead’s Coffee Bar so we’re psyched to see them, not even 12-months on, opening a second space!

“Gateshead has been ticking along really well, we’ve created a really cool little following there. It gets super busy at times, which is cool considering it’s pretty far off the beaten track,” Chris said.

Always keeping their eyes out for the perfect second spot to come up, the team actually noticed the space when it became vacant back in 2020 but it wasn’t until it became available again in March this year that the crew decided it was time for Josie Coffee 2.0.

“We jumped on it. It’s got a nice prominent location and sits right in the heart of the Mayfield community; it suited our style.”

Calling the iconic corner space home, Josie Coffee follows on from past cafés that have set up shop including long-time residents Portafilter and the team behind SMAK Coffee, Hanburys.  

Having been a café space for years, the bones of the building were already there, making it a rather smooth transition for the Josie Coffee crew to set up and open their doors.

“We just wanted to make it suit our style and improve the layout to optimize workflow. We are very big on getting coffees out the door fast, so we designed the coffee bar to flow really well.”

Officially opening up their doors in early May, it’s been just a month, and they’ve already started building a list of regular coffee and toastie customers.

“It’s been great, we’ve started to develop a regular customer base and have been engaging with the local community. We want this café to be a real community hub, it’s surrounded by residential properties and people want somewhere to feel a part of, especially on the weekends.”

A community is exactly what you can see the crew are trying to create. They’ve done it at Gateshead and we can see the Mayfield crew are already well on their way to developing their own community.

Continuing their signature style of service, Josie Coffee in Mayfield will offer the same coffee and bean selection with just a little more choice in the food department and more seating space.

“We have carried across our three toasties from Gateshead (Ham Solo, Vegelante, and the Reuben Watkinson), cake, and banana bread, but this site has a few more substantial food choices.

“We have; the House Cooked Beans with crème Fraiche and sourdough ($14), Steel Cut Oats with apple compote, flaked almond and fresh Little Big Dairy Cream ($12), as well as Sourdough Toast ($6), and Fruit Toast ($8).”

Chris and Kate, alongside the rest of the Josie Coffee crew, are putting all of their energy into the two venues, their wholesale program, coffee training, and of course their online sales. With their goals to focus on continuing to create great coffee and getting it out to the community.
