Home to what could be Newcastle’s cheapest chicken schnitzel
Tucked inside the MEX Club on Hanbury Street in Mayfield, a new culinary destination is quietly making waves.

Iron Plate, officially opening its doors in March this year, has been plating up a fusion of bold flavours and comforting classics that has quickly captured the attention and tastebuds of the local Mayfield community.

Described by its creator as “a fresh, high-quality dining experience designed to bring people together over great food,” Iron Plate blends refined techniques with everyday favourites.
The menu leans into approachability, while still pushing the boundaries of flavour and presentation.

Bistro food has come a long way from the days of uninspired schnitzels and soggy chips. While affordability and approachability remains a key drawcard, there’s been a noticeable shift towards quality ingredients, thoughtful presentation, and menu creativity.

Diners are now expecting more from their local and venues like Iron Plate are delivering. Here, you’ll still find value-packed weekly specials, but the overall menu is distinctly elevated. It’s proof that club dining can be both accessible and exceptional without compromising on taste, price, or experience.

“Iron Plate is all about creating a welcoming space where food becomes the anchor for connection. It’s not just about what’s on the plate – it’s about the moments and memories made around it.”
Although not originally from Newcastle, the owner now considers the city home. With a career forged in kitchens and shaped by years of experience working within the club dining scene, the launch of Iron Plate at the MEX Club was a natural progression.

“We’re thrilled to have formed a long term partnership with the people behind Iron Plate.
“They’ve been and continue to be very successful in clubs for decades at large venues like Beresfield and Wyong and they bring so much experience to the club dining space” MEX Club CEO Greg Rickford said.
The menu is a tightly crafted selection of dishes that reflect the venue’s mission – flavour-forward, hearty, and always satisfying.
Standouts include the spaghetti iron flame, a fiery, flavour-packed pasta dish that has fast become a crowd favourite as well as the tender lamb cutlets generously portioned and grilled to perfection.
“The authentic wood fired pizzas are sensational and I’m biased of course, but you just have to try my favourite, the spaghetti Iron Flame – it’s amazing!”

Pizza lovers are raving about the porkstar topped with pizza sauce, mild salami, ham, pancetta, onion, and mozzarella. The prawn saganaki delivers a Mediterranean-inspired punch with its tangy tomato base and melty feta, while the rocket & pear salad offers a refreshing counterpoint with its sharp parmesan and delicate sweetness.

And for those chasing something classic, the lemon pepper calamari, chicken schnitzel, and beer battered flathead nail the brief.
In true club tradition, Iron Plate also offers weekly specials that hit the sweet spot of value and taste.

Without a doubt, the standout is Monday’s $10 chicken schnitzel offering (members price) that comes with chips, slaw, and gravy – upgrade to Dianne, mushroom, or creamy garlic sauce for $3, a parmi topper for $6, or a creamy garlic prawn topper for $8. Could this be Newcastle’s cheapest chicken schnitzel?

Iron Plate’s arrival marks an exciting new chapter not just for the MEX Club, but for Mayfield’s dining scene. Whether you’re in the mood for a laid-back dinner, a family meal, or a go-to local favourite, Iron Plate delivers a dining experience where warmth, flavour, and value for money come first.
