Mayfield’s not-so-little espresso bar continues its community-driven philosophy by launching a brand-new menu featuring some indulgent and over-the-top items alongside your traditional Aussie brunch favs to keep the whole crew happy.

With owner and forever bubbly lass at the helm once more, Leya alongside the rest of the dedicated, and resilient Onyx Team, they have made their way through a tumultuous few years now stronger than ever with a menu to match!

“So far, 2022 has been amazing; it has been the busiest it has ever been. Onyx has just been thriving and we’ve got some really great staff which I’m really grateful for,” Leya said.

With great staff headed by Leya, alongside an incredibly supportive community has seen Onyx not only come through those crazy few years but come out on top with one hell of an offering that any keen foodie, whether an experience seeker or flavour finder would be mad not to explore.

“The kitchen has been putting out some really great food and the customers are just loving it. The place is just thriving and is just so full of life. Basically, when the sun is out, it feels like we have all of Newcastle here.”

As always, the venue is open seven days a week, with a full-day menu offering you all the Onyx goodies from open til close. With the kitchen team banding together and utilising their creative flair, the menu has well and truly hit the spot when it comes to finding that balance of trusty go-to dishes and quirky flavour combinations.

“Our new chef, J Bird is just super creative and has so much passion for creating in the kitchen. Some of the influences have come from my own inspiration, but other things have just been solely left up to her.

“We’ve kept a lot of the classics on the menu like the Smashed Avocado, the Pancakes, and the Nutella French Toast, then a few things on there that are a bit left of field.”

From the breakfast side of things, you can’t go past the flavoursome Nutella French Toast which comes complete with Nutella pocketed French Toast topped with honey-coated roast hazelnuts, fresh banana, ice cream and maple syrup.

Want something a little heartier? The crowd favourite and unique take on a classic, the Onyx Pork Benny is made with 16-hour slow-cooked pulled pork, baby spinach, and house-made hollandaise served on a toasted croissant!

“I had never seen a Pulled Pork Benedict before, and we had it on the menu a few years ago and it sold really well so we figured we’d bring it back, but this time served on a Croissant. It’s really a point of difference and we sell a lot of it. It’s so delicious and decadent.”

Moving into the lunch-styled dishes, there’s one you just have to try if you’re after a deliciously tantalising meal; the Laksa! Experience the spiced house-made Laksa broth with vermicelli noodles, crispy veggies, toasted sesame seeds, and fried tofu. YUM!

“Monday are Toasties, Tuesdays are Burgers, Wednesday are salads, Thursdays are wraps, and Fridays are pizza! We’re basically pumping from start to finish every single day; it’s honestly crazy!”

Now, what to order to wash all that indulgent food down with? How about a brand-new Onyx creation and ever-so naughty treat; the Onyx Freakshake!

“I was inspired by what I saw a café in Canberra doing which was really cool but I wanted to come up with my own flavours. So, I got into my own little creative zone and came up with what I thought would be best.

“I trialled a whole heap of flavours and then did an online poll of what people would like the most. Based on that, I then picked the top four flavours which have now made it onto the menu.”

Without further ado, let us introduce to you the Onyx Freakshake flavours! First up is the Golden Gaytime with dulce de leche, caramel fudge, golden gaytime popcorn and gaytime ice cream; the Ferrero Rocher with Nutella, beuno, crushed hazelnuts, chocolate, and Ferrero; the Biscoff Caramilk with Biscoff spread, caramilk ganache, caramilk breakaway, and Biscoff crumbs; and lucky last, the Choc Fudge Brownie Sundae with choc fudge, pretzels, twirl, wafer, chocolate, cherry, and choc browine.

“With the toppings, I just wanted to go all out and crazy and to just make it look like completely over the top and decadent.”

Is coffee more your thing? Well, you can’t go past the ultimate ice latte lover’s dream; the Iced Latte Tasting Board. That’s right, think a beer paddle but for iced lattes! Choose four options from the list and find your favourite iced latte flavour; cold drip, cold brew white or black, butterscotch iced latte, iced milk choc mocha, iced white choc mocha, iced Biscoff latte, iced chai, and iced dirty chai.

“As far as I know, nowhere else in Newcastle offers these! They have been selling like absolute crazy!”
