Discover this hidden foodie haven in Mayfield
Over in the quietly booming suburb of Mayfield, right under our noses, there has been a lengthy renovation that has been slowly but surely changing the local foodie offering with a diverse range of offerings.
Meet, Hanbury 58 Food Collective.
Located within the walls of the MEX Club, Hanbury 58 Food Collective is the collaborative approach of two signature local brands and personalities: current owner of the Blue Door Group, Peter James, and previous owner of Honeysuckle Social and director of Concept Hospitality, Damian O’Reilly.
Aligning their beliefs, the pair joined forces and pulled on their individual creativity, innovative thinking, and years of experience, identifying a unique opportunity and brainstorming for the launch of Hanbury 58 Food Collective.
Officially opening their doors on the 1st of September, the new foodie offering situated inside the MEX Club on Hanbury Street brings something new and exciting to the locals of Mayfield.
“Months before we opened, we transformed the area with a $2.0M renovation to make our vision a reality – creating a market-leading multi-menu offering.”
Walking through the main doors to the MEX Club, make your way through to the back where you’ll find a foodie haven filled with all your flavour-filled dreams with numerous cuisines on offer all under the one umbrella.
“Hanbury 58 is Newcastle’s newest bistro offering a ‘collective’ of four different menus, a café, and a dessert Sundae bar. The venue has a capacity of over 350 people, which lends itself to being a great location for large bookings and functions.”
The foodie offerings include Maria’s Italian, Chippies, The Chicken Shop, Soho Grill, Butter Cafe, and Lulu’s Sundae Bar; all of which are managed by the same team.
“Each of these brands features its own menu to ensure we cater to everyone around the table. We saw a gap in the market where families often can’t decide where to go for lunch or dinner because of different needs and desires. With years of experience, we developed Hanbury 58’s brands whilst keeping in mind what Newcastle’s proven crowd favourites are.”
So, let us take a closer look at these foodie offerings, shall we?
Maria’s Italian
Right off the bat is none other than Maria’s Italian – featuring a hearty and traditional offering including hand-stretched pizza, delicious pasta, and crispy fresh salads. To start, we’d recommend the Arancini with parmesan, mushroom, porcini, and truffle mayo or the Garlic Prawns complete with garlic, thyme, white wine, butter sauce, and steamed rice.
For mains pick from the comprehensive pizza list or dig into a creamy flavour-filled pasta. Our picks would be the Pepperoni pizza with white salami, sopressa, fior di latte, and fennel seed; and the Seafood Spaghettini pasta complete with prawns, squid, cherry tomato, and bisque sauce.
Chippies
Home to delicious burgers, battered fish, prawns, oysters, calamari, and of course, chippies! Think of Hanbury 58 Food Collective’s Chippies as an elevated Aussie fish n’ chips joint!
Not quite sure what you’re after? Order yourself (or your group) a Seafood Tasting Plate and sample a bit of everything including natural oysters, salmon, bang bang prawns, battered fish, hot & salty calamari, chips, and grilled focaccia.
Are burgers more up your alley? Much more than just your typical works burger, the Chippies menu features five burger options all of which are worth the hype. HUNTERhunter recommends the Pulled Pork Burger with slaw, chilli jam, pickle, and mayo.
The Chicken Shop
Up next is the dedication to all things bird, The Chicken shop! This menu is for those who like to customise everything on their plate. Step 1 - Choose from grilled or crumbed chicken. Step 2 – Choose your flavour - think Parmigiana, Mexican, Italian, and more. Step 3 – Choose your side; will it be chips or a mixed-leaf salad?
It wouldn’t be a complete chicken shop offering without wings! Diners can choose from three flavours for their wings; honey BBQ, classic buffalo, or garlic parmesan.
Soho Grill
Looking for a serious meal? One filled with meaty goodness and flavoured sides? Look no further than Soho Grill. Featuring delicious dishes like their iconic skewers, pork ribs, steak, and of course a divine range of sides.
Butter
In need of coffee and cake? Meet Hanbury 58 Food Collective’s all-day café, Butter! Open from 11am til 9pm, Butter is your go-to for all your sweet treat and caffeinated needs.
Lulu’s Sundae Bar
I scream you scream we all scream for ICE CREAM! The team at Hanbury 58 Food Collective has created a dedicated sundae bar with all the toppings you could imagine. Lulu’s offers DIY soft-serve ice cream and lollies for just $8 per serving. The best part? You can load it up with as much sweet goodness as your heart desires.
“We created Hanbury 58 Food Collective to give our community a place to spend time with family and friends on a regular basis and have therefore given our customers an excuse to get together every day of the week.”
That’s right, the guys have pulled together a bunch of offers available on the daily to give you an excuse to sample the extensive foodie flavours available.
Mondays you can get your hands on Soho Grill’s famous skewers for just $19. Tuesdays offer $15 Chicken Schnitzels with chips and salad from The Chicken Shop. Wednesday you can get your hands on $14 burgers with chips from Chippies, and Thursdays offer is for two-for-one pizza at Maria’s Italian.
This incredible new venue is perfect for everyone. Complete with an indoor play area for the little ones which will be soon to have a refresh, it may just be one of Mayfield’s go-to foodie joints for young families.
