Newcastle’s most iconic event space merges history with the Hunter’s best produce

Ask any one who lives local to Newcastle about Fort Scratchley and chances are they’ll mention the daily boom of the guns, the labyrinth of underground tunnels, and the layers of history sitting high above Newcastle Harbour.

What fewer people know is what the site has quietly become today – not just a lookout, but a modern function centre serving up some of the best food in the city.

The first thing that strikes you is the setting. Floor-to-ceiling windows open up to a view that sweeps across the coastline, the Cowrie Hole, the harbour, and the city skyline in one perfect frame.

Step out onto the deck and you’re right in the thick of it - salt spray in the air, whales and dolphins frolicking, ships slipping past, the kind of view that makes you pause mid-sentence and think, yep, this is Newcastle.

Inside, the Function Centre is bright, modern, and versatile. Since launching as a function centre in 2008, the venue has hosted everything from intimate dinners, to corporate events, and big celebrations, it even offers free parking right on site.

Pair that with more than two centuries of history underfoot and you’ve got a place that manages to be both iconic and full of fresh surprises.

Outside of the picture perfect views, and layers of history, what guests continue to talk about is – the food.

The kitchen team has created a menu that is a tribute to the Hunter region.

Think briny, freshly shucked Port Stephens Pacific oysters, sourced from G&D Oysters farms, who have been family owned and operated since 1995, paired beautifully with a crisp local white, and Hunter Valley beef  served with vegetables grown just down the road.

For Clarissa and Sam, who tied the knot at Fort Scratchley in March 2025, there were several menu highlights, including the masterstock pork belly with bok choy and ponzu entrée, and native pepperberry and saltbush-crusted lamb rack served with lemon white bean smash, seasonal greens, and romesco sauce which was served as a main.

One of the most requested dishes is the rare Binnie Beef wagyu crostini – bite-sized, rich, and unforgettable.

Owner, and fourth-generation farmer Steve Binnie says the secret to their award-winning beef is what the animals eat:

“They’re grazing clovers, nibbling herbs – they’re a very healthy animal, which makes the beef both more nutritious and more flavoursome.”

Oyster farmer Lucas Ashley has a similar philosophy: “The flavour really depends on where the oyster finishes. Closer to the sea, it’s saltier. Further up the creek, you get creamier notes. We try to keep them as close to wild as possible.”

That kind of care has earned Fort Scratchley Function Centre a finalist spot in the 2025 Awards for Excellence, and plenty of love from those who’ve celebrated milestones here.

Newlyweds Clarissa and Sam summed it up best: “We loved that everything was in the one place – ceremony, photos, reception – it made the day so relaxed. And the food? Our guests are still talking about it.”
