More than a cafe: Inside Food Farmacy’s approach to eating well
Written by: Mia Pennington
Buzzing alongside Atune Health’s integrative clinic in Newcastle, Food Farmacy is not your average cafe.
This wholefood, plant-based eatery is built around one big idea: food should help your body heal, not just fill you up.
Every bowl, dessert, drink, and frozen meal is designed with an anti-inflammatory focus, so you can feel genuinely good about what you’re eating, without sacrificing flavour, colour, or the social joy of sharing a meal.

Whilst off the typical Newcastle beaten track, Food Farmacy has become a destination for people who are willing to travel for food that is grounded in nutritional science and tastes amazing.
Customers regularly come from Sydney, the Hunter Valley and even interstate to stock up on this uniquely nutrient dense menu, that is all made from scratch using locally sourced and certified organic ingredients.
Owner of Food Farmacy - Camila
From unique products you won’t find in your local cafe cabinet, meal plans and nutritional help, to meals created in partnership with health professionals, it’s the kind of place you visit once and immediately start planning your next trip back.

So what is the Food Farmacy?
Food Farmacy is best described as a wholefood, plant-based eatery with a strong clinical backbone and passion for helping others. Think the ease, comfort and warmth of a cafe, blended with the nutritional rigour of a health service.
At Food Farmacy, everything on the menu is:
→ Wholefood and plant-based
→ Designed around an anti-inflammatory diet
→ Made from scratch, daily!
→ Packed with local and mostly organic produce, with around 80% of all sourced materials being organic.

Situated inside the Atune Health clinic, Food Farmacy works alongside GPs, dietitians, naturopaths, nutritionists, and exercise physiologists. Health professionals can recommend meals, drinks, and tailored food programs, so patients can walk out of an appointment and straight into the cafe to pick up food that matches their health plan.

What makes Food Farmacy different (and worth the trip)
Alongside Food Farmacy's incredible anti-inflammatory menu, there is also a list of ways owner Camila has certainly made this little Cardiff cafe worth the trip.
But don’t just take my word for it – the Food Farmacy's current 5-star Google rating certainly can!
A curated and nutritionally considered menu
The menu is completely plant based with a strong focus on being anti-inflammatory, feel good food. The Food Farmacy’s meals, sweets, and drinks are designed to support gut health and reduce chronic inflammation, with a big focus on fibre-rich plants and minimally processed ingredients. Within the cafe’s menu you will find a breakdown of what area of the body each item benefits.
Linked directly with healthcare and research
Food Farmacy began as a not-for-profit health promotion project, has worked with charities and Newcastle Uni, and continues to be integrated into research on how food impacts health. They’ve seen real changes in people’s medical markers when diet and clinical care are combined.

Programs, subscriptions & meal plans
What really sets the cafe apart, is its commitment to building community. Beyond the cafe, there are:
→ A cooking club and classes held every week (like wholefood, plant-based cooking during school terms)
→ A subscription model where members can attend weekly sessions, access recipes and education in a private Facebook group, and receive discounts
→ Fresh and frozen takeaway meals you can grab from the freezer or pre-order in bulk (which is why some customers drive in from Sydney or the Hunter Valley and stock up for the month)
→ Unique products you won’t find everywhere. From low-sugar Brazilian cashew-and-Brazil-nut cheeses to organic grape “healing wine” (all of the vibe, none of the alcohol), gluten-free banana bread, and carefully sourced niche pantry items, there’s a sense of items that are uniquely Food Farmacy.
Food Farmacy’s strong emphasis on anti-inflammatory eating
At the heart of Food Farmacy is a commitment to anti-inflammatory eating, a nutritional concept that can help combat a range of health issues.
As Food Farmacy owner, Camila puts it, “when we talk about anti-inflammatory foods, we’re really talking about a high-fibre diet.” She explains that inflammation can be acute (like a cut) or chronic, but it’s chronic inflammation, the internal kind, that is most influenced by what we eat.
“The microbes that live in our gut feed off fibre, and fibre is only found in plants,” she says. Without enough fibre, the good bacteria that support our immune system and even our mental health simply disappear. That’s why so many people experience intolerances, and also emphasises how our diet can directly influence our overall health and wellbeing.

Food Farmacy is also offering to customers not just an amazing dining experience, but the chance to learn more about different foods, and their benefits.
“People think healthy food can’t taste good,” Camila says, “but you can have meals that are colourful, delicious, and social and still anti-inflammatory. You don’t have to give up pleasure to feel good.”
This is why the Food Farmacy’s savoury bowls, wraps, desserts and drinks are all designed with purpose: they feed the gut, reduce inflammation, and help the body thrive. Whether someone is dealing with diabetes, recovering from surgery, navigating intolerances, or simply wanting more energy, the science is the same: feeding the gut feeds the body.
What it’s like to eat there
Stepping inside Food Farmacy feels like entering a calm, nourishing hideaway. The space is warm and inviting, with an indoor and outdoor atmosphere that encourages you to slow down, sit with your meal, and genuinely enjoy it.
Customers wander in after appointments from the adjoining clinic, friends meet for lunch, and locals pick up takeaway meals for the week, with a frozen meal freezer located at the back of the store, where you can browse their selection of freshly made, ready to heat meals.

The cafe’s display is always brimming with fresh, from-scratch dishes, turmeric-golden recovery drinks, house-made treats, and colourful wellness bowls that make eating well feel exciting rather than restrictive.
The cafe chefs work with seasonal produce to create daily specials that are made fresh each day, and can enjoyed in store, or as takeaway. Check out the Food Farmacy Instagram page to find out what the special is for each week.
Behind Food Farmacy, meet the owner: Camila
Food Farmacy is very much the vision, and passion project, of owner Camila. Originally from Brazil, she grew up vegetarian and later trained in plant-based cooking, studying wholefood cuisine online before moving to Australia.

“I realised you can make vegetarian or plant-based food taste amazing,” she says. “It can be exciting, it can be comforting, and it can help people feel genuinely better.”
Her background working alongside health practitioners, her commitment to accessibility, and her belief that food should support healing all shaped what Food Farmacy is today, a cafe built on science, culture, and compassion.
