The cafe, part of the One Tudor brand, is the sister business to Peibri Place, the event and function space located just upstairs, and is brought to you by owner, Jake Chatfield, and managed by long-time hospitality enthusiast, Jak Jones.

Jak brings with him almost a decade worth of experience in the cafe scene, and Flatfish Cafe has quickly become a go-to spot for fresh seafood, quality coffee, and spectacular views, making it more than just your average fish and chip shop.

“We’re incredibly lucky with this location, it really doesn’t get much better than this,” Jak said.

Flatfish Cafe takes the classic fish and chips concept and elevates it in a way that’s both approachable and fresh.

“We’re not recreating the wheel, but we’re just making that typical experience a little nicer. Everything's made to order as well as being crumbed and battered fresh. This area needed someone to offer fish and chips so we’re glad to be the ones doing it.”

The menu features a selection of lunch packs, burgers, flatbreads, kids meals, weekly specials announced on social media, and even a signature breakfast menu available until 11.30am.

“We don’t do your standard calamari rings or pre-battered fish. We use good quality flathead and barramundi, which we either grill or hand batter ourselves. The whole menu has a real homely feel. Everything has been hand done and fresh.”

In addition to seafood, Flatfish Cafe takes its coffee seriously, a point of pride for Jak.

“We get our coffee beans from Manly-based roastery, Little Italy. They’re really lovely guys and being a bit of a coffee snob myself, I really wanted to ensure we found a blend that was right for us, that was good, and a little different for the area.”

As Flatfish Cafe approaches its third summer, Jak and the team are gearing up for the busiest time of the year. To kick things into gear, the Wickham-based eatery has partnered with the crew upstairs at Peibri Place to bring Wickham’s Seafood Twilight Fair this Saturday, October 12.

“There will be food specials, live music, full bar service, market stalls, and more with free entry and something for the whole family.”

Additionally, the corner spot collaborates with Peibri Place, Inner City Winemakers, and Seven Seas Oysters every Sunday from 12pm-4pm, with Sunday Reset; think live music, seafood, and wine.

“That’s a continuous offering and it’s open to the public to pop in every single Sunday.”

Though Flatfish Cafe has already achieved a lot in its short time, Jak and the team have big plans for the future, including growing their catering services and their dreams for a liquor license, that would add yet another layer to the venue’s appeal.

Whether you’re in the area and just dropping by for a morning coffee and sweet treat, or are having a day out enjoying Newcastle, Flatfish Cafe offers a unique fish n chip shop experience unlike any other in Newcastle.
