It’s been more than four decades since the beers flowed at Tighes Hill’s iconic Cross Keys Hotel, but as of early February 2026, that all changed with the hotel undergoing a complete overhaul, and relaunching once again as the Cross Keys Hotel.

The relaunch sees a whole new chapter and a fresh creative vision, and behind this transformation are hospitality duo, Corey and Kristy Crooks, the owners of Newcastle East’s popular Grain Store.

Subtly combining old charm with modern touches, Corey and Kristy have breathed new life into the former pub site, and created an inviting space designed for the whole community to enjoy.

Step inside and the refresh is unmistakable. The teal, gold, and neutral palette pops, but it’s the main bar artwork that really gets the conversation started.

Working with artist James Brennan, who also recreated nostalgic retro brewery signage to mirror what once featured between the curved corner windows, James has created a striking artwork that showcases a lineup of Newcastle legends from sport, music, and art. Even the much-loved Big Dog makes an appearance.

A mix of cosy booths and low seating provide ample space throughout the light-filled pub and high stools hug the bar.

“My vision for the pub was always art deco, New York vibes, but the building is very much about the architectural curves,” says Corey.

“I’ve been reliably informed by local pub historian Ed Tonks that the Cross Keys once housed NSW’s largest horseshoe bar, typical of the 6 o’clock swill era, so we’ve honoured that history by creating a modern, large L-shaped bar that sits partly where the original once stood.”

“Our focus is on creating a community pub where all ages are welcome. There are no restrictions on kids being allowed in as we have no gaming areas, and we’ve inlaid game boards like chess into our timber tabletops to encourage families to play.”

Moving through to the back of the hotel is a large atrium style space which brings beer garden vibes, and acts as the perfect space for groups to catch up in.

Even the bathrooms haven’t been overlooked, thoughtful details add a touch of luxe and carry the venue’s aesthetic all the way through.

While the ever-popular Grain Store has carved out its own legacy, Cross Keys offers something very different.

“We’ll have 24 beers on tap and because we have a lot more space for wine here than at the Grain Store, we’ll be able to stock a larger variety,” says Corey.

“Our menu is more gastropub than diner and we’ll serve up traditional pub meals like schnitzels. We’ll still do the wings though, because they’re perfect for people who are having a few beers and just want a quick bite.”

Cross Keys is gearing up to become Tighes Hill’s new local hangout. Whether it’s a long lunch, a cheeky mid-arvo beer, or a family night out, Corey and Kristy have created a space that feels instantly familiar.
