The Warners Bay esplanade is now offering up coffee and cocktail
Lake Macquarie locals can now start planning a fun night out without having to make the way into the city with the Warners Bay esplanade café space, Caléo extending trade to Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.
The year-old lakeside coffee hotspot has been convincing both Lake Mac locals and Novocastrians that they might just have some of the best coffee in the area. Now, they’re serving up a different take with Caléo by Night.
Serving up a refined food, beer, wine and spirit menu alongside a curated cocktail line-up accompanied by live entertainment on Friday evenings, a seat at Caléo by night may just be your best weekend plans.
“People are loving having this here because for locals, they no longer have to go all the way into the city for that same nightlife experience. We’ve got that beautiful sunset view, live music, cocktails and tapas.
“We’ve just launched our evenings with a Modern Australian tapas menu. Our cocktails have all got their own twist. We don’t explain exactly what they are on the menu because they’re a bit of a surprise when they come out. It’s a newer concept for the area,” Bailey said.
Brought to you by mates Bailey Walters and Ricky Briggs. The pair, both Lake Mac locals met whilst working for the Rural Fire Service in 2017 and bonded over their ideas for the local hospitality scene.
Bailey with a chef background, and Ricky with his experience in the world of Real Estate, the unlikely duo has united their skills (and creativity) to create a unique experience in Warners Bay. Caléo officially launched to locals in November 2019 and even with COVID restrictions taking place this year, the café has been hitting its stride.
Now, the name Caléo is a talking point in itself, with Bailey explaining its meaning…
“The name Caléo originally stemmed from the seaside town of Callao in Peru where the saying ‘all Callao’ meaning all good is part of their culture. Rumour has it that if you are in a bad mood, Callao is one of those towns where you don’t stay sad for long.
“That’s exactly how we want our customers to feel every time they enter our doors. Whether they are in search for a pick-me-up in our great coffee or have a little more time to spend with us and experience our food, we are all about the customer experience and ensuring that we too, represent our very own all Caléo.”
The day menu features all your favourite Australian brunch items including Smashed Avocado on sourdough with cherry tomatoes, labneh, dukkah, capsicum pesto and balsamic reduction and the ever-so popular Mushrooms on Toast; roasted mushroom on sourdough served with beetroot relish, dukkah, grilled halloumi, black garlic aioli and poached egg.
“All our baked goods are from Gareth at Covered In Crumbs. We used to work together at Restaurant Mason, and I did a bit of work for him at Covered In Crumbs. I couldn’t go anywhere else and his products are just awesome. We were baking muffins here, but nothing compares to what he can do.”
The lunch menu continues with Modern Australian favourites including a Chicken or Grilled Halloumi Burger, and vegan options including a Caléo Bowl and Strawberry Salad.
The Sundown menu consists of a range of light dishes including Slow Roasted Pumpkin served with dukkah and feta; Baked Brie with rosemary, beetroot hummus, dukkah, honey, and sourdough; as well as natural and Kilpatrick oysters. For something more substantial, the menu extends to dishes including Lamb Cutlets with roasted pumpkin, green beans, and rocket & apple salad or the Crispy Barramundi with fried kiflers, leek, and chimichurri.
“We use all the freshest produce we can get with heaps of it coming from Dylan at Newcastle Greens.”
So, whether you are finishing up a walk around the bay or your on your way home from a hard days work. Drop by Caléo on the Warners Bay esplanade and pick up a coffee to go, sit down for brunch or enjoy the beautiful Lake Mac sunsets with a cocktail in hand.
