Bar on the Hill

The iconic Bar on the Hill reopens, bringing a refreshed space for students and music lovers.

When it comes to live music in Newcastle, few venues can boast a lineup of artists as impressive as Bar on the Hill at the University of Newcastle.

Originally opening in the 1980s and funded completely by student funds, Bar on the Hill has been the go-to place for students to catch up over coffee before, between, and after lectures.

Once the sun set, Bar on the Hill would transform into a thriving bar and live music venue, hosting music legends such as Silverchair, You Am I, The Whitlams, Jet, Eskimo Joe, Tool, Grinspoon, Powderfinger, The Rubens, Pnau, Meg Mac, The Living End, and Regurgitator.

Wanting to ensure the legacy of Bar on the Hill continues for many decades to come, the venue was closed in November 2024 for some much-needed renos.

The overhaul has brought a refreshed space that now features pool tables, a fresh lick of paint, more food options, even the beer garden out the front has been given a little bit of love.

On Wednesday, March 26, the University of Newcastle officially reopened Bar on the Hill, with University of Newcastle vice-chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky welcoming students back to this iconic social hub.

To celebrate the occasion, the University hosted an official ‘First Shout’, with the first 100 students through the doors receiving a schooner of beer and the ringing of the bell, reminiscent of how it all began 40 years ago.

"We wanted to recreate the spirit of what it was. It was regarded as one of Newcastle's institutions and we've basically invested in that, " Professor Zelinsky said

Professor Zelinsky went on to say that the university has once again taken ownership of the venue following the previous commercial arrangement not working out.

"I think it is very important what goes on in the classroom, but also what goes on outside, being able to socialise with friends and colleagues, and get an affordable meal."

To highlight this historic moment, the University uncovered a photo from 1985 when the Bar first opened, showing a group of students lined up at the bar all keen to help celebrate the occasion.

While 40 years may have passed since the first beers were poured, there’s no doubt that Bar on the Hill will continue to live on as the heart of University of Newcastle student life and maintain its legacy as one of the region’s great live music venues.
