Starting with Strawberry Shortcake Waffles at The Autumn Rooms
It may not be news to you that Newcastle is loaded with talented chefs and foodies who are constantly pulling together some extraordinary flavour combinations.
Keen to share some of our eating highlights for 2019 we’ve pulled together the below list of our top 18 dishes covering everything from quick bites to elaborate eats.
To start this incredible edible list we thought we’d begin with breakfast, it is the most important meal of the day and when looking for something hearty, wholesome and full flavoured The Autumn Rooms on Darby St is one of our go-to’s. Their always fresh produce flavours, awesome coffee and next level breakfasts is what keep us coming back, along with those Strawberry Shortcake Waffles!

Enjoy a perfect combination of fresh strawberries, tuile, shortbread crumble & strawberry whipped marscapone... Why not try it with an espresso martini!
2. Zaaki Espresso - Jordanian Fried Egg || $15
Where: 402a Maitland Rd, Mayfield
We were recommended this dish early last year and we can't get enough of Zaaki's Jordanian Fried Egg with hummus, halloumi and za’atar turkish toast.
3. Equium Social: Ricotta Pancakes || $16
Where: 1/5 Maitland Rd, Mayfield East
House made ricotta folded through fluffy hotcakes, cream, maple, strawberries and nuts.
4. Clyde St Café: Ciabatta Sandwiches || $14.50
Where: 54 Clyde St, Hamilton North
Try any of the Ciabatta sandwiches from this little gem of a cafe, especially the Smokey Eggplant, spiced cauliflower, pickled beetroot, za'tar, herbs and sprouts.
5. The Autumn Rooms: Brisket Bowl || $21
Where: 127 Darby St, Cooks Hill
For a hearty lunchtime meal it's hard to go past the Pulled Beef Brisket, Spiced Black Beans, Corn, Rocket, Tomato, Crispy potatoes Pico Di Gallo, Guacomale & Chipotle Aioli.
6. Bao Brothers: Notorious PIG || $8
Where: The Corner, Cnr Pearson and Ridley Street, Charlestown

It might be the name, but the flavours are pretty goddam good too, we're talking Braised pork, pickled cucumber, hoisin, kewpie mayo, peanut praline and coriander. So good!!
7. Antojitos: Baja Fish Burrito || $16.80
It's long been a favourite those casual Californian/Mexican street food flavours and the Tempura battered fish burrito w/rice, shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, avocado, mayonesa & salsa naranja is always on top of the pics.

8. Pino’s: Any of the Starters || $14 or $ 15
Where: 98 Maitland Rd, Islington
We chose the deep fried crispy brussel sprouts on our visit but you can’t go wrong with any of the starters on the Pino menu.
9. Parry St Garage: Sweet Potato Gnocchi || $23.50
Where: 106 Parry St, Newcastle West
Try the super soft, sweet potato gnocchi, with cavolo nero, soft feta, walnuts & sage butter.
10. Susuru: Ramen || From $16
Where: 140 King Street, Newcastle
We love our Ramen and Susuru is a regular lunch time spot, and whilst we find it hard to go past the Spicy Miso Butter Ramen, we’re always keen to check out the special flavours that pop up regularly.
11. Eight Buns: Roti || $18.80
Where: 47 Beaumont St, Hamilton
Dumplings are of course always a menu selection but the the Chinese Roti w/ Beijing Duck and Cucumber has become another one of our trusty favourites.
12. Bella Italia: Linguine Alla Marinara || $29
Where: 545 Hunter Street, Newcastle
In need of Italian? The Linguine with fresh seafood mix, confit cherry tomatoes and a touch of Napoletana sauce is one of our favs.
13. Bocados: Seco De Cordero || $30.50
Celebrating 20 years in business this year reminded us why Raul and the team at Bocados have been around so long.
14. The Falcon: Burgers!! || $18
Where: 10 Pacific St, Newcastle
We’ve fallen hard for The Falcon's Nashville Chicken with pickles, tangy slaw and hot sauce burger. We’d also highly recommend the Apple Pie Cocktail should you be in the mood.
15. The Oriental: Three Little Pigs || $16.90
Making a decision about what pizza to order is hard work these days, but the Ori in Cooks Hill never lets us down. The super crispy thin base and delicious flavours are what keep us coming back.
16. The Tea Collective: Low or High Tea
Whether you take the Low or High road you're going to be in for a delicious experience. Expect three tiers of savoury and sweet with some of the highlights including deliciously plump dumplings and handmade scones complimented with of course a traditional black tea or glass of bubbles.
17. Estabar: Mapo Gelato || $5 (one scoop)
Where: 61 Shortland Esplanade, Newcastle
We all love gelato and we have plenty to choose from these days and Bec at Estabar has, since time began, been offering up a smooth selection of gelato flavours. What you may not know is that things have changed slightly with Bec now sourcing her gelato from Mapo Gelato in Newtown.
18. Son of a Gun: Death by Chocolate
Where: 66 Beaumont St, Hamilton
Another newbie to open at the end of 2019 Son of a Gun offers breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night eats, and our fav, Death by Chocolate!
